Alright the draft is over, stop you're b*tching. The Free Agent signing period starts tomorrow and I want to here some d*mn trade speculation. What, are there all of a sudden no rumors floating about. If everything we've been led to believe is correct, Cuttino should announce his signing tomorrow. Rashard should be getting some offers that Seattle will have to match. Hill, Duncan, McGrady, Rose, Miller, & Croshere are all prime targets. Who do we really want to get rid of? Is the trade exception more valuable if it expires? Screw the draft, the next few weeks will decide our future for years to come. Let's stop second guessing Rudy (besides he's usually right) and start with ridiculous rumors. Here, if it will help, I'll go first. Marcus Fizer will be traded. Where is he going?

FA signings can't be announced until August.

All you can do starting tomorrow is talk to FA's and teams. The signing period doesn't begin until August 1. But I agree with what you're saying, let's hear some stuff about our free agent period.

Moving Walt for Mullin sounds like a good idea to me. I just dont hink Walt will ever be good enough for his contrat. There are better players out there for that kind of money--Austin Croshere, Rashard Lewis to name a few. That said, though, the only problem I see is who starts at SF. Anderson is just too small. Is there any other players with one year left on their contract. IT would be better to trade for a taller SF. How many more years does Horry have on his contract--not that LA would want Walt.

I want to keep Williams this year. He proved his worth the last month or so of last season.

I would like to try and trade for Harrington. Maybe Rogers, Drew and 2nd round pick?

I really want the Rockets to trade for Lorenzen Wright. He could be that defensive/rebounding forward everyone is crying for. He only played 16 minutes per game in Atlanta last year so he may be available.

I would trade Kenny Thomas, Matt Bullard, and Bryce Drew for Wright.

He is pretty good but thats too much for him. I would love to get Danny Fortson, he is a great rebounder and can help this team alot.

I would really like to keep Walt, but the draft has shown me that we are truly looking to the future. That being said, Walt is not the answer long term. If it means an extra 4.5 next year, then hell yeah! Trade his ass. I like him and I think he showed how important the SF can be in our system, but I say trade him now and reap the rewards later.

I would like some clarification on the dates however. I was under the impression that the signing period starts tomorrow. At any rate, can't a trade be made and just be unofficial till August 1st? This whole lockout and CBA stuff has really twisted my B-Ball brain.

Teams can begin discussions with free agents July 1st, they can't sign them until August 1st.

The rockets have some decent trade bait

    Milwaukie pick 11-18
Orlando conditional 20-29 if next yr
    Detroit pick 13-23
    Drew
    Rogers
Walt if trading for a SF
Cato if Collier is the real deal
    4.3 million in exception

The rockets need to convince McGrady into a s/t. Lenny doesn't want to lose him to an east team much less for nothing.

Yes, trades/signings can be announced, they just cannot be acted upon. Remember the Bender/Davis deal? Had to wait 'till Aug 1 to actually go down.

I agree that Walt showed a lot at the end of last season. However, is he worth losing 6.3 mil (which is what his contract jumps to after next season) of cap space in 2001? Basically, if the Rockets keep him, that will prevent them from making any type of run at Chris Webber. Keeping Williams into next season is not going to work either b/c if he stinks it up again, no one will want him. Atleast his trade value is decent right now.

As far as the Lorenzen Wright thing. I have been a big believer in his skills and feel he just has not been given enough PT. However, he emerged at the end of last season for the Hawks, and I dont know if they want to move him. Also, I think from Rockets fans you will get a ton of opposition b/c he has not proved himself enough to be worth his 7 yr 42 mil contract. I would be willing to take a risk on him, but I bet majority of the Rockets fans would be against it because of his contract.

Do you think Walt is the answer at 3? NO. Well why do you want Webber so bad he is the same age as Walt, and how do you even now he wants to come here. After playing for the Kings he probaly doesn't even want to play with a flashy guard, who's to say he will not take less to play with Shaq. I'm not trying to be negative but I'm just being realistic.

This isn't totally what this thread is about but here is how to use the trade exception. If a team wants to clear cap space this offseason, we take on contracts with one year left as long as they will give us draft picks. It will be similar to what Orlando did last offseason in a way.

I think we keep the players we drafted and go after guys like Othella Harrington and Rishard Lewis. I think any other big name FA is out of the question with our salary situation.

    Well, how's this for speculation:

I personally think the Rockets need to unload Walt Williams this offseason. The Rockets need to set themselves up with cap room for the 2001 summer and basically move Williams for players who are in the last year of their contract.

I would like to know what the people with sources have heard on this.... Would the Pacers be interested in the Wizard? Considering Isaiah Thomas is about to be the next coach there, and he is the one that gave Walt this contract back in their days in Toronto. Walt had some of his biggest success in Toronto.

I think if Indiana is interested, then the Rockets should take anyone who's contract runs out in one yr. Looking at their salaries, I found that Chris Mullin's contract expires in one season and his salary is a perfect match for Wizard's in a trade. If the Rockets move Walt Williams and dont use the 4.5 mil trade exception, they would have something like 14-15 mil under the cap in the summer of 2001. Chris Webber?
