Trade Griffin?

Before everyone jumps down my throat, I would like to pose a scenerio for the Rockets. I don't have a problem with Griffin, other than him shooting a lot of 3's, and this is more about the next yr or two in the Rockets future. I know no one can predict the future, we can only speculate or wish or whatever you do. I don't know if it will shake out this way but check it out anyway.

Assuming we continue on our course and wind up in the lotto land and there isn't no way we can get Odom or Lewis so the Rockets draft Chris Marcus. Maybe at full stregnth and a break here or there, the Rockets maybe make the playoffs at the 6,7, or 8th seed. Now here's where it gets interesting. The 2003 season, Duncan is a free agent and the Rockets will be moving into a new arena. Of course we'll be over the cap but they will have, albeit little trading power. With Duncan commanding 14+million in salary, which is basically what Taylor and Cato makes. Of course this wouldn't be enough to get him, but if the Spurs said give up Griffin and Duncan is yours, would you do it? At that time Griffin would be 21 and Duncan 27. Would getting Duncan for 6 peak yrs and a chance at the ring immediatly be worth giving up a player like Griffin?

Some people will blow off the top and say it makes to sense and it would never work or they wouldn't ever give up Griffin, but getting a chance at a player hitting his prime and teaming him with Francis and Mobley would no doubt make the Rockets the team to beat with or without Shaq still playing. After the addition of Duncan, then all you would need is role players like Morris,Thomas, and Norris. Whats do you think?

I would consider it but I dont think that is a likely scenerio.

Nugzfan: I think that's a "Duncan refuses to return to San Antonio" type scenario.

Incidentally, unless Griffin looks really stellar next year... sure I'd do it. But the odds of it ever happening are 500,000 to one or so ;).

There is no chance in hell that SA would trade Tim Duncan for Eddie Griffin!!! Eddie Griffin has a tremendous upside, but he will never be a Tim Duncan.

Read the post above yours, this is a scenario in which Duncan says he will not return to San Antonio.

As far as the deal - Taylor/Cato/Griffin for Duncan is too much, especially if the team made serious progress and got into the playoffs.

No, but I do believe Denver would trade us McDyess for Tierre Brown and a bag of Doritos.

He's shooting 36% from downtown. Why do you have a problem with him shooting threes? Mobley and the Wizard are the only 2 players on our team that shoot a higher percentage than Griff.

i agree with puedlfor, that's too much to give up for duncan if they continue to improve over the next year. especially if cato is turning into what we need at center. it is however an interesting idea for SA if duncan says he's gone.

Duncan's face makes my head hurt. I don't know if I can stand looking at him in pinstripes. Yeah...it's a lousy reason, but the truth is, I believe Griffin will vastly improve and he will be one of the top forwards in the league in the next 2-5 years.

Plus, Eddie has a calmer demeanor. :)

don't forget, duncan got booted earlier this year

Taylor/Cato/Griffin is not to much to give up for Duncan. Heck, I would even include Francis. That is a lot to give up but a player of Duncan's calliber comes every 5 to 10 years. He can single handedly take a team into the playoffs. Look at the spurs roster, they do not have that much talent.

Its cool, I didn't want people to think I didn't like Griffin or anything I was just posting a scenerio. The only reason why Cato and Taylor had to be included was for salary purposes and Griffin is the catch. I don't think its too much considering we would go from just a playoff team with them to favorites with the addition of Duncan. I know its a lot of "ifs" which me or no one else can know for certain.Cato progressing into a decent is still a if, a bigger if than this trade. Marcus may or may not turn out to be any better, but we know what we'll have in Duncan, the leader in double double's and a top 5 player in the league if he continues like he should. Griffin at his current pace should be a top player in about 4-5 yrs which cool i guess, but i still don't see it as that one sided. Look what Detroit got for Grant Hill, Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace after they signed new contracts with Orlando and was traded. Its true Grant has been hurt, but at the time, even though he was hurt, he was a top known player in this league.

If we included Francis, we'd have Duncan and not that much else. That wouldn't win us any titles. The spur sure aren't going to win it all this year. Leaving out Francis, I'd make that trade. We don't really know how good Griffin will be, but we know Duncan is amazing.

No way I deal Eddie. We're talking about a guy who isn't even a man yet.Let Griffin blossom and we have another true superstar...all we need is patience now. This injury to Mo while unfortunate in the short term, has greatly benefitted Eddie already. When he fills out and plays the 4,his blocks and rebounds should go throught the roof.... our interior defense will improve along with it exponentially.Likewise inside,I expect he'll wreak havok offensively.Eddie has the potential to become an all time great..He can flat out do it all.Right now he's getting his feet wet,but down the road,he should be serving notice to the league on a regular basis on who their daddy is.In the meantime, get him the minutes...let him find his game for now..adjust to the pro game.Let the backcourt grow with him.....
