Toy Story Question

I was watching Toy Story (pt 1) with my son last night, and something caught my attention...Buzz insists that he's a space ranger throughout most of the movie, until he realizes that he is just a toy(dumb@ss jumping off the guard rail!!!). Now, the problem arises in that while he believes that he's a space ranger, he still goes in to that "toy coma" when kids are around. What's up with that.
