    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/eu_hungary_sludge_flood;_ylt=AqHMZL68SSulqtKltOIikqqs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTJvNmc0Z2Z1BGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAxMDA3L2V1X2h1bmdhcnlfc2x1ZGdlX2Zsb29kBGNwb3MDMQRwb3MDMgRzZWMDeW5fdG9wX3N0b3J5BHNsawNzY2llbnRpc3Rzc2E-

Seems like the sludge wasn't toxic, but just very caustic. Of course that still really sucks but causticity is something that can be dealt with much more easily..

This site pretty clearly describes the alumina manufacturing process... It's probably the sodium aluminate that's causing the problems in Hungary right now.

But these environmental disasters never happen where the rich live, so nothing changes.

That toxic crap has reached the Danube river, so it will get to where the rich live (although diluted).

It's not toxic... it's just basic, which is instantly solved by the dilution of the river.

Why does this have to do with the EPA? This happened in Hungary.

That's amazing. Good luck cleaning up that slop. I would have already moved away if it were me.

Yeah, damned Hungarians can't embrace American government agencies like they should.

What happened in Hungary is what happens when independent government oversight is subverted by the financial imperatives of business. Which is what some people want to do to the EPA.
