Is this the end of Kenny the Jet Smith? TNT's NBA Broadcasts Will Feature Magic LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Turner Network Television has signed NBA Hall-of-Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson to be a sports and NBA studio announcer for the 2002-03 season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In January, Turner signed a six-year deal with the NBA which includes exclusive playoff coverage, Thursday night doubleheaders and February's All-Star Game. In preparation, TNT is assembling an all-star broadcasting team. The network signed outspoken NBA great Charles Barkley to return as a studio analyst three weeks ago. Johnson will appear on TNT's studio show, "Inside the NBA" and several other Turner Sports programs. The former Los Angeles Lakers star enjoyed his guest appearances on last year's TNT NBA broadcasts. "I had such a good time with the TNT crew last year, I had to come back. I just ant to be a part of it and be one of the costars to the star, Charles Barkley," he says. Johnson's previous television experience includes hosting a late-night talk show on the FOX network. "The Magic Show" was canceled shortly after its 1998 premiere
Yeah, Magic sucked...Kenny has better chemistry with Charles, but if Magic isnt as freaking racist/ignorant towards white/european/foreign players as Kenny is (just watch the draft), i'd rather have him.
I hope they employ Magic in the "sports announcer" role moreso than in the "NBA Studio announce" role, because frankly - he's boring, thinks he's always right, and isn't that good of an analyst. Though, I don't think I would mind him replacing Cheryl Miller on the sidelines...
You guys remember when he got into that argument with Ainge? I can't remember what it was about but Ainge was so obviously right, but Magic kept on and on and on like he was.
I was watching the Rockets Lakers 1986 conference finals on ESPN classic this last weekend with my buddies and one of em made a comment on how much cooler Magic was back then. I agree. Young guy, like Vince Carter age, goatee, not bald, looks mad all the time, like a real baller ready to compete. I like that Magic. I don't like this old bald huge wise man that everyone goes to for advice. I like the young skinny mean baller with hair. I also like it when Dream beat the crap out of the Kupchak feller. That was hilariious. Dream with a right! left! right! gets tackled by the ref!
Magic sucks....I'll never watch TNT again. He talked so damn condescendingly to Ainge in an argument in which ainge attempted to be intelligent, and Magic basically said he was right because he is one of the best players ever. And I rarely take the side of Danny Ainge. Maybe I'll tune in occasionally for a dose of Sir Charles.
Too many cooks in the kitchen now, he will disrupt the chemistry. At least it will be funny to see charles make fun of him for sleeping around (during halftime of laker games even, according to ESPN!), as I'm sure he will.
I believe it was over how KG couldn't deliver in crunch time, and whether or not it's the responsibility of the superstar to deliver in crunch time.
I think that Magic wasn't a good televison commentator. He was barely even a good game analyst. He has shown to have no talent when it comes to TV so it might be better that he just stick to running his businesses and cheering the Lakers. I don't think this is a good move by TNT, but Charles, EJ and Kenny will make up for it.
tihs reminds me about his magic hour show.. was it just me or was the tragic hour one of the worst shows ever..?
"It's the ULTIMATE!" Oh my, this is a bad move from TNT. I'd rather listen to Bill Walton ALLLLLL DAYYY than listen to Magic for an hour. Terrible.
