It's huge. I doubt he will be an allstar caliber player for more than 3 years after this one. Probably 2 years max. Will the 20+ mil he is getting after those years severly choke the Rockets? Are we doomed to mediocrity during Yao Ming's most productive period?

It looks like TMAC's back is failing him alot sooner than I had hoped so I have almost given up on a championship, especcially with the Spurs being such a force, but I was hoping we would still have good playoff years.

Jeez. Fickle fans. It's just a shooting slump. Even 6 wins in 7 games cannot stop some of you homers from jumping off the cliff.

I wish that were true. It seems that there are a few Rocket fans who feel this way. I can't believe I'm reading posts and hearing people call into 610 to talk about trading McGrady.

so in 09 he will be payed 21 mil and 2010 he will get 23 mil. He has a chronic back problem. Not getting better. I didn't say he sucks now. I didn;t reference his current performance at all. I just said in 2 or 3 years he won't be an allstar. Call off the troll hunt.

Geez dude, how do you get by day to day if this is your outlook when we've been playing so well? Afterall, you might get hit by a bus so why bother going to work?

That being said, his back is definately a concern but it is worth the risk. Maybe it won't work out. But if he finds a good workout routine this offeason and goes onto having a troublefree career, its a no brainer. Hightsight is 20/20.

Even if Tmac can stay quasi healthy, Yao still has a chance to be our MVP. A dominant big man is almost always preferable to a dominant permimeter player. We don't need two dominant players (eg the 94 Rox or the last 5 games with Yao). We'll just need solid role players and I beleive we can still win. Our current cast, IMO, is good enough if they play near 100% of their potential and stay healthy. Big ifs. Bogans is a great addition for defensive purposes and spell TMac.

I think its pretty obvious Yao Ming will be our long term MVP but i don't think he has the athletic ability to carry us like Dream did.

My basic point is we better be prepared to start paying serious amount of luxury tax to be a contender.

I'll pay an injured Mcgrady for 30mil until 2010 as long as were champions within 3 years. ;)

That is freaking sad. They'll all fade away very quickly and have memory lapse once he gets back on track

This post isn't so ridiculous. His contract runs another 4 years at an average close to $20 million per. We don't have any idea the circumstances under which his back will get better. The last thing I read was that resting it won't make a difference. I can't believe that would be true, but if it is, there's nothing to lead us to believe his situation will improve especially in light of the daily pounding he's getting just from playing NBA level ball.

People are entitled to slumps...However, to say his back problems never cross anyones mind is silly...Of course it does...Does that mean we're Doomed, no, but it does mean we need other guys to step up and be that third option...

they are gonna have to do some real evaluating of his back this off-season. for the first time yesterday, to me at least, the guy looks like he has lost some athleticism. its like he was a step ahead of everyone else, and now he doesn't have that explosiveness that separates superstars from average players. the guy couldn't get around q richardson for goodness sake. and mcgrady getting his shot blocked, that's unheard of.

    Wow, 1 star for you.

ENJOY THE DAMN WINS! I honestly miss the quiet days that the GARM had when Yao was injured. But, I don't miss him being injured.

He is in a slump, I am pretty sure he is playing in pain.

    Yao is doing great.

Rockets starting to play like a team....STOP WHINING!!!

Definitely, I think its a combination of Tmac being in a slump and his back. Yao, doing great. Hell Yeah!!! He's starting to take control, but the whole team knows they cannot do this w/o tmac being on the floor!

I think TMAC's shooting slump is being magnified given our need to win just about every game from here on out to make the playoffs. Everyone is hoping that we bring our A game everyday. There is just no margin for error. So every bad game or poor shooting night is going to be magnified more than usual. Dude is still averaging 25 points per game and was getting his teamates involved last night. As long as he is working hard, fans need to accept the bad shooting nights. It happens.

Exactly! We wouldn't have won last night with out TMAC. His offense was non existent, BUT NY was still double teaming him over and over and over last night allowing other Rockets to be open.

Plus he made a lot of nice passes.

Thankgoodness we have Yao to take over when TMAC isn't ontop of his game. LIke we have TMAC to do vice versa when Yao isn't up to top notch.

hopefully this dont turn out like Allen Houston's situation. That guy's injury probably ruins NY for like 10 years.

I believe Les Alexander has said he will go over to the luxury tax territory if he has to in order to make us a championship caliber team.

So basically if they feel the combo of T-Mac + Yao + roleplayers doesn't work anymore because T-Mac isn´t the force he used to be, i´m sure they will do anything they can to pursue some help with a third star-caliber player, even if it puts us over luxury tax. Les can afford to take the financial hit for a few years if he feels we have a real chance.

Of course we would prefer for us to get lucky in the next draft or two to get a young player - not necessarily a superstar, but occasionally capable of carrying a team - similar to Joe Johnson, Corey Maggette, Cuttino Mobley, Andre Iguodala etc. Salary-wise that would be ideal.

T-Mac is such a scorer, that he can score 15-20 sitting in a wheelchair and if Yao gets us 22-25 (in his prime numbers) and our third star 15-20 points, we'll still be a serious championship threat.

Les has made bold moves before, maybe more than any current owner out there, so I'm sure he won't just watch and see this team fall to mediocrity.

Allen Houston wasn't a franchise player even with healthy knees. Deadly shooter, yes, but not someone who could carry you to the championships.

What has happened in NY is series of bad investments on mediocre players and then even worse decisions when trying to clean up the mess. Allen's injuries play just a small part in that catastrofe.
