i was flipping through the nba website and they say san antonio can clinch the top spot if they beat minny today....

however even if the beat minny and then lose the next two (while dallas wins the next 2) wouldn't they lose the top spot because of a worse division record compared to dallas 12-4 vs 13-3

i know.... who cares... but i'm really bored

i hate to bump my own thread... but now that SA has won against Minny, my question still arises... if SA loses then next 2 and dallas wins the next 2 - why wouldn't dallas win the division record tiebreaker?

i was under the impression that it was conference record, not division record.. (not that i've looked at the standings or anything)..

espn says conference before division but i found this on the spurs own website from 2005... (maybe the nba changed it this year?)

    ah, even more confusion:

    from the following article at
    http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/.../MYSA040606.5C.BKNspurs.notebook.96bf12e.html

Not such an edge: If the Spurs lose to Dallas on Friday, they wouldn't enjoy as large a tiebreaker advantage as thought.

When the NBA released its standings last week, it listed conference record as the second divisional tiebreaker behind head-to-head record. A league spokesman, however, says that was an error: The correct second tiebreaker is division record

i know it probably doesn't matter, but i'm hoping for our last game of the season to mean something (knock SA out of the top spot)

Bronx: I too was hoping that Minny would win, not only to get a win for them, but also to ensure that SA would need to beat us in the last game. But alas, the SA scrubs will have to beat our scrubs on their own...

the article changed a little since it was first posted... now it says that SA still needs one more win or dallas loss to clinch number 1 seed

i think espn is mistaken... if there is a tie, and both teams are in the same division, you go by division record before conference record. SA has a better conference record than DAL, but they would have a worse division record IF they lost to us on the last day (of course it would only matter if SA and DAL finish with the same record).

Fear not. San Antonio must beat us in order to get their franchise record of most wins in a season. They are going to beat the crap out of us in the last game.

Pop don't care about the regular season at all (he even feels HCA is overrated).

If Spurs come in w/everything locked up; you ain't gonna see nothin out of them.

Well, we'll see soon enough. They also want to maintain momentum going into the playoffs. I really think they'll be trying to win.

The good news (sorta) is their bench is better than our starters right now and these bench players want to show they deserve playoff PT. I don't expect us to beat them at all.
