What is the BBS’ opinion on the Wii?

I own a PS3. It serves my goal of being my main video games system (mostly madden with friends or MW2 by myself) and our bluray player in the living room.

I have a wife who really wants no part of the PS3 but said she would be willing to play the Wii with me since the games seem simple and fun and you are not just sitting down.

We have a son who is about 2.5 and she said if he was to ever play video games she prefers the Wii and the fact that it requires moving around as opposed to sitting down and button mashing.

I am pretty sure we are getting one, just curious what your thoughts are. I have had friends say adults they know have Wii parties where they play different games etc.

I think it would be cool to actually play a video game with my wife.

We've had a Wii for a couple of years and here's my opinion:

The Wii is not a serious gaming machine like the PS3 or the Xbox. If you like those games and the powerful graphivs they provide, the Wii will feel like an Etch-a-sketch.

    But...

Wives and Little kids LOVE the Wii. It is a lot of fun to play together and to share as a family.

    Benefits:
    games can be easily bootlegged
lots of fun for entire family (I know I sound like a commercial, but it's true)
generally cheaper than PS3 or Xbox 360

    Drawbacks:
    vastly inferior hardware
they make you buy a lot of hardware
    non-HD

and that's why we got it.

On a personal level, I like watching free movies from netflicks through the Wii.

Most of the games get boring fast...but the games from Nintendo are good. I have/recommend Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros. That's bout it...haha. A lot of people like Super Mario Galaxy...but I wasn't interested in a mouse pointer game.

Just be careful about what games you buy...there's a megaton of shovel ware.

Almost forgot, Gamestop has Nintendo Wii games on discount. Add code 2d15 for additional 15% off and free shipping. You can get both Mario Kart and NSMB for $68 shipped.

It's more like a second system, to pair with a 360 or a PS3. Nintendo's games are solid as always (New Super Mario Bros., Mario Galaxy (best platformer of the generation), Metroid, Zelda, etc.) but outside of that you are going to get a lot more options on the HD systems.

Still, a fun system, great for a party system, and some real gems to play.

It's a good little system especially for what you have in mind.

I've never been to a wii party but i could see how you could bust it out and have some fun. A game like boomblox is a lot of fun and can be played by anyone. I've only played a handful of titles (mostly their franchise games) but i know they have several party game packs that are really popular.

Plus, being able to play old nintendo games via download is pretty sweet.

I think you guys would enjoy it.

Obligatory: wii is for kids...and why is your wife leaving the kitchen.

all you used the mouse for was shooting stars. I don't understand how that little thing could ruin a truly great game like galaxy.

I'm really not the person to ask, but I would guess the Wii is like playing flash games online - simple, fun, nothing deep or involving, and more fun to play in short spurts.

According to some article I read a while ago, wii is the most purchased system but the xbox 360 is the most used.

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10426467-17.html

I just recently bought ps3 because of the quality issues I hear with 360. The games are okay, but I'm so sick of FPS. There's virtually 10 to 1 ratio of FPS vs other games on the ps3.

I may buy a wii for Mario World 2

This is VERY true - there are a lot of very crappy Wii games out there. This is why I highly recommend bootlegging.

I have a PS3, which is mainly Blu-ray, media sharing player, photo viewer, and DVD player.

droxford beat me to the one reason why I don't like the Wii: no HD.

I also have a Wii. My daughters enjoy playing the Mario-based games like Kart and World, and they like the voting stuff and the sports. Yeah, I could tell you that the PS3 is not very "moving" friendly, but I told my family that if we got the Wii, we'd be playing together some PS3 games, as well. It's backwards compatible, so I can play the BUZZ JUNGLE PARTY, DISNEY BUZZ TRIVIA, and ROBO JAM BUZZER party games from my PS2 on it.

Also, the Gran Turismo franchise isn't on the Wii.

Get a Wii. There's no valid reason not to. The Mrs's usually don't care if it has HD or not.

only reason to own a wii is for the mario & zelda games.. otherwise the PS3 is coming out with its own wii knock off controllers which will be better than the wii's.

Do you all notice a difference between RCA's and component cables?

I ask because I don't want to take the TV off the wall if I can avoid doing that.

Are you talking about COMPOSITE (yellow) compared to COMPONENT (Red, Blue, Green)? "By all means, move" (name that movie, difficulty: easy) to COMPONENT... or HDMI if you have it.

You're talking PS3, or Wii? Wii can't do HDMI. You knew that, no?
