just wanted to start a thread to see what everyone thinks of Jason Collier.

Personally, I think once he gets a chance to prove what he can do fully healthy he'll be a heck of a contributor to the Rockets. Combine that with the new NBA rules and I think he'll be someone that provides a lot of excitement for Rockets fans for years to come.

    What are everyone else's thoughts?

It was a mistake to draft (err, trade for him) in the first place. The guy's got zero game. Othella was better, and he's no starter.

I disagree. And I know "The Cat" is gonna pounce all over this post (he does not share my view, which is fine) but Collier has not yet shown that he will ever deserve any real PT in the league. Even if he does become consistent from the perimeter, he doesn't have the quickness, strength, or lift to be an effective defender in the post or out on the perimeter. He is no better a shooter or defender than Greg Foster, for example. I personally feel that if RT really wants a Collier-type player on the roster we should just go find Pete Chilcutt and bring him back. He's a better, more experienced player w/o the long term contract and injuries.

Collier should have been drafted with the 58th pick. I believe him to be the worst player on the Rockets, and I really would like to see him cut. He is beyond help, and I believe Cato has more potential. A few 5 point 2 board games in garbage time does nothing for me. Re-sign Carlos, dump Jason Crappier!

Here comes the Cat, ready to destroy me.

I'm sorry Cat, but you won't change my mind.

It's plain and simple: Jason Collier SUCKS! Like ZRB said, he is absolutely the WORST player on the Rockets. A total stiff with no skills. The Rockets looked downright stupid when they asked Milwaukee to take him with the 15th pick. I predict he will go the way of Rodrick Rhodes and be cut pretty soon.

Oh, btw Cat. Don't give me that BS about how Collier held Shaq to 24 pts. Shaq could have broken Wilt's record that game if he wanted to. And I don't want to hear any BS about giving him a fair chance. He plays matador defense, is slow as a mule, and has NO muscle. He can get his chance in the NBDL then work his way up to the pros. Jason Collier is your definition of a BUST.

man, I didn't realize that there was so much hostility here.

I think giving Collier a chance is a good way to go. After all, he did have knee surgery this past year. Basing your opinion on Collier from this past year is like basing your opinion on The Dream soley on this past year....it's unfair to all involved.

I really like Collier -- IMO he's a lot better than the overpaid Todd Maccollough.

I saw him in person during last year's preseason and I was like "HOLY CRAP, we wasted a draft pick". But when the season got started, he was doing really well. He put up solid numbers and gave as much effort as Othella Harrington. He was shaping up to be a VERY solid backup, but then he was injured.

In trying to come back from the injury, Jason was not the same. His numbers were terrible, and his game was pretty limited. Finally, his season just ended.

The key will be how well JC's come back from the injury. If he comes back well, then I think he's the best center we have. But if he is still hobbled, and can't perform like he did early on last year, then it could be a long season at the C spot.

    ? Pete Chilcut ?

Collier is not as bad as all would suggest, but he is no Cato :D

He has many skills, but speed is not one of them.

Backup is what he will be.

I agree...Collier will be a decent back up if he remains healthy this year.

I think the Rockets need to get Marc Jackson and get rid of CATO(I know it's been posted thousands of times).

CATO IS THE WORST PLAYER ON THE TEAM.

I really doubt the Rockets can unload Cato with his paycheck or just cut him. Hell, maybe if we are lucky he will have a kickass first month, and we can trade him to Toronto for Dream back.

Guys keep in mind that he was a rookie last year, and injured too. Give him some time and I bet he'll turn into a decent backup that could give a good 20 mins a night. I remember he had some good bright spots when he was given time in a couple of games last year when he was healthy. His stats from the begin of last year when he was healthy were very decent.

Also Rudy didn't get him to be a banger so don't expect him to get many rebs or blks, Rudy got him to pull centers a way from the basket with his outside shot, he's not going to shut anyone down defensively. I would be happy if he could give us 20mins 5-7pts 4-5rebs a game someday. But right now at this moment he is very far from recovering from his injuries that I don't expect him to play much or be in our rotation coming this season. I hope he does get healthy by the start of the season or else we really need another center or two on the team.

collier just seems so.... fragile, and..... slow, and.... third option-ish.

i wanna like him, though. hopefully he gets healthy sometime this season (couldn't play in the summer league, that's not a good sign) and can give us more than cato can. we'll see.
