One of the guys I work with is also a guy I go to church with. A great guy. He and his wife have basically adopted some inner-city children who are having a really tough time with horrible family/living conditions.

He just got off the phone with their aunt who said she'll take care of the kids....he remarked to her that she was unemployed. she said, "that's ok...i still get my unemployment check. i could get a job real easy, but the government still owes me $18K worth of unemployment, so i'll hold off a while."

that makes me angry.

Why does that make you angry? Our government has provided her with a financial incentive not to work. Can you really blame her?

Why don't you do what many here would do: refuse to admit that such a thing could exist. If you keep telling yourself that it can't possibly be true, it will become false.

...and while you're at it; vote for politicians who would throw more money at the problem. Surely, some of it will stick.

Max didn't say that he was angry with her, although I suspect he is. He just said he is mad... at the government's policy?

Sorry….as a perennial cynic, I guess I expect everyone to see my sarcasm. Now that I've noted it, I guess I should apologize for my outburst too. Things like this kind of piss me off too.

What is sicker in my opinion is that often bums like the aunt will take full advantage of having the kids by requesting even more assistance from the government.

She'll probably never have to work again another day in her life.

Sick.

Not me, I love to waste my tax dollars on lazy ass people who do not want to work. I would rather them have it than it go to something worthwhile like in my bank account. I work hard to give my money to jackasses that take advantage of a system that was set in place for people that are in need. Welfare, unemployment and other government programs are ****ty and are designed to fail. Until you give these agencies people that are intelligent and you give these people the freedom to make decisions, the system will always be flawed. There are circumstances that the system fails people that are in need because of some stupid guideline. There are even more circumstances where the guidelines make it easy for the system to be manipulated.
I think that people should have a counselor type person, maybe a social worker that gets to know that individual on a more personal basis. I think that these angencies should work together more, where a person can get the help financially (unemployment $$, WIC, welfare, etc.) and employment (job hunting, job training, etc.).
When my wife and I first got married, we lived on our own and I had been out of the military about 3-4 months. I had been working and the business that I was working for went out of business and I was unemployed for 2 months while trying to find a job. I had a 6 month old baby and we were dead freaking broke. We were able to get WIC which gave us some stuff but because we had a car that was worth more than $4000 or some **** like that, we couldnt get any welfare. We owed $3000 more on the car than it was worth. We didnt have a penny of equity in anything. We didnt need help but for maybe about 3 months, to get us back on our feet. There is no reason that the government couldnt help us. There are many many people that are on the edge of completely losing everything and just a little help would keep them afloat. I pay my taxes to the government but where was the government when we needed help? Probably paying some dudes aunt unemployment that was too damn lazy to get a job, while we are getting food and daipers from a church and having to beg the gas company to not turn our heat off in the middle of the winter in Wisconsin.

While the above case is totally abusive of the system and of her, what is sadder to me is those who think most others in her position as well as the homeless are typically in their situations because it is their choice and we should just let them drown.

Just my 2 cents.

Welfare is not the problem. The problem is the people who are abusing welfare and the fact that the government lets them abuse it.

Everytime a woman on welfare has a child, she gets a bigger check. So what does she do? She has more kids and the government gives her more money.

This makes me very angry too!

Yes, this case makes me angry as well. For one thing, she's basically stealing money. For another, she's making many people believe that all poor people who are receiving benefits from the government are the same exact way...it's simply not true.

I would give all of these slackers welfare for the rest of their lives, and their children's lives as well, if we could just end corporate welfare. All of the money that we give to the airlines, automotive industries, and other companies that are earning a profit makes all of the private wellfare look like chump change.

I'm just mad because it's abuse....and because the govt knows this is fairly common but doesn't seem to be willing to make necessary changes.

maybe she lied to the agency and told them she is real close to getting a job with VanDolet Industries...they're in latex, you know

MadMax,

I hear that the government half-heartedly encourages this. Of course you're likely to cough up a vote for your friendly politican if he provides a roof, food and chump change every month without you having to lift a finger.

Meanwhile teachers, military personnel, policemen and firemen continue to be severely underpaid.

You really don't believe this do you. Last I checked (granted it as been awhile, and it was before the welfare reform), the average family on welfare received less than $10,000 from the government.

Please share with us how you could possibly live comfortably off that money.

I've witnessed a case like this before and it made me very angry. This woman that my sister knows has had 8 children (last one was one or two years ago) and has never worked a day in her life but then again she doesn't have to provided that all of her assistance comes from the government.

Not a problem, Rocketman.

1) Housing will probably be free or pretty close to it if I don't have income.
2) Depending on the number of kids I have, I will probably receive a substantial amount of money for food, part of which I can exchange somewhere for cash.
3) I will also receive some type of assistance to pay my bills with. Anything left over, which I'll admit isn't much, is spending money.
4) Because of my lack of income, I will be able to receive certain benefits while filing taxes as well.

Look, I never said that anyone lives comfortably. I said "without lifting a finger", as in working.

...and by the way Rocketman, you'd be amazed at how many people consider having a roof over their heads, food to eat, and the utilities paid living comfortably.

Many of us working people do! :p
