Just got back from lunch there. OH MY GOD! Some of the best barbecue in the city. The only place I know of that makes better ribs is Williams Brothers Smokehouse in Acres Homes. Thelma's is located at 1020 Live Oak, between Lamar & McKinney, on the other side of Hwy 59 from the Convention Center, behind the old Chinatown. If you are ever in the area during lunchtime, I highly recommend it. That's it. It's naptime now!
Haven't been there, but I will someday... Outside the city, I gotta say Joe's BBQ in Alvin... I can gain 10 lbs there everytime...
Drexler's entire family should be wounded for the flesh that they call barbeque. I've got to try Thelma's!
Have you ever heard of Burns Bar be que in Acres Homes? That's the best I've had, but I will have to try Thelma's. AnotherBrother, you are so right about Drexler's.
Thelma's = Overrated. For some reason that place is picking up steam all of a sudden as far as publicity goes, and people think it's en vogue to say how good that place is. the meat is ensconsed in fat, and the sauce is disgusting. don't rush to get there.
I love Clyde, but I'm not too crazy about their BBQ. Central Texas Style BBQ in Pearland (518, just West of 35) is pretty good stuff.
I have to agree. Man I was really dissapointed with them, we just went a few weeks back before they moved into the new building. Hopefully that will help their food. RMTex - I will have to try Thelmas, I am like 3 blocks from GRB Conv Center so that place should be pretty close.
Here's a review page, mostly mixed. I've never heard of the place, but these reviews speak for themselves. Service appears to be slow. But if you want some reeeaaallll ribs, order some from URL=http://www.dreamlandbbq.com/] this place[/URL]. My current hometown. Of course I don't eat there much if any, not that I don't like the barbeque, I just don't like ribs. Ahh, nevermind then. I know there's better bbq in Houston anyway.
I really like Goode Company on Kirby. Probably my favorite place is actually in Waco. Uncle Dan's barbecue. I could drink their sauce straight.
Just to be sure - are we talking pork ribs or beef ribs here? I'm guessing beef, since we're in Texas and not the south...
Grrrrrr... man, talk about killer BBQ. Their sauce is so great that I just keep dipping their yummy bread in it. Hell, you could make a meal just from their bread and sauce. Awesome ribs and sausage. I've had better brisket, but the sauce and the rest of it make up for that. Can anyone tell I love the Salt Lick? There's a great BBQ place in Lufkin I've forgotten the name of. It's got great fried rolls, if that gives anyone a clue. (this IS Texas, folks ) My Dad used to time our trips from H-town to my Grandparents spread outside of Quitman around lunch there... either on the way up or on the way back. God, I love good Texas BBQ. There are so many superb places, just in Central Texas! (slobber, drool... gettin' tha jones for BBQ... must have BBQ) (and my 11 year old son is a vegetarian... )
I was watching a show on PBS about sandwiches across the U.S. and they did a segment on Thelma's BBQ. I still haven't made it, but from everything I've heard, it is spectacular. The guy doing the show said it's one of the best BBQ places in the south.
Yah....I like Grand Prize....and I've been wanting to try Queen's in Galveston too, but I haven't gotten around to it. I've also had great BBQ at Hinze's in Wharton or Sealy (59 or I-10, respectively), but they smoke over pecan, and I'm a sucker for pecan smoke.
