with JVG coaching our team, it seems like he only knows 1 style of play. That is, slow it down, play defense and go inside out on offense. As I watch the Heat play ball, I wonder if we got the wrong Van Gundy to coach our team. We have the same type of players. A dominant center, a dominant guard. The Heat actually push the ball up and get easy buckets. A Jeff Van Gundy team never gets easy buckets. Maybe Van Gundy can't adjust to his talent. Does he try to mold players to his style of coaching instead of coching to the style of players he has? I really feel like we can be an elite running team. We have TMac, Lue, Barrett, JJ. Comeon, last year, even with arguably the 2 quickest players in the open court (Cat and SF) , our running game couldn't get going. They're kicking ass running the court in Orlando. So, JVG need to utilize the running game more to get easier buckets. All our points come the hard way. Maybe we do have the wrong Van Gundy.
JVG wants the guys to run on fast breaks especially when the opposing team looses the ball on offense and is out of position but the players don't seem to want to run. It all starts with the guards.....they have to run and push the ball up the court and force the others to fun the floor.
I mentioned this in another thread: Ok, maybe its just me. I have noticed that last season and this season (more this season) the Rockets don't pass to Yao unless he is in a certain spot when he is posting up. When he is posting up on one side and the ball swings to his side, if he is not in a definite spot, the guard (whoever it is) looks and passes back to the top of the key and ball swings to the other side in which Yao Ming reverses and starts posting up on the other side. Sometimes, he still doesn't get the ball. Now, we all know the ball moves faster than a person can so what is the deal? Another situation, sometimes the play is called at the top of the key, so he sets a pick on one side of the floor (sometimes nobody uses it), then goes all the way to the other side to start posting up, the problem is, the guard already has the ball on that side and is waiting for Yao to post up, giving the defense time to set up. What is all this wasted movement by Yao and wasted time?
