Something I was just thinking about this week regarding this show. Sorry but this will be a long read. I had time available to check on this. ____________________________________________________________ By now we all know that The Emmy voters and The Golden Globe/HFPA voters dissed The Wire numerous times and didn't give the show the due recognition it deserved for its excellent BUT Someone's gotta call out the NAACP. I was listening to an old inteview that "Omar" gave and he talked about how he was nominated for an NAACP award once but lost. Which got me thinking, I wonder if The Wire and actors/actresses from the show ever won an NAACP Image award. THEY NEVER WON A SINGLE DAMN NAACP AWARD! I mean forget The Emmys and The Golden Globes, tell me what competition did The Wire have for an NAACP Freakin Image award? 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009. Outstanding Drama series nominations. 2003 and 2004 they lost to "Soul Food". Apparently "Soul Food" won three years in a row. 2005 they lost to "Law and Order". WTF? 2007 and 2009 they lost to "Grey's Anatomy". WTF again. A double WTF when one realizes "Grey's Anatomy" won the f##king award FOUR years in a row. Did the voters just not have premium cable tv and an HBO Subscription?? I'm not sure what the damn criteria for Outstanding Drama series is for the NAACP Image awards but I would imagine one of the criteria has to be significantly diverse cast featuring minorities/people of color? The only thing Grey's Anatomy had was a black creator/executive producer. The Wire had a cast that was damn near 90% black if not more. Outstanding supporting actor in a drama series Idris/Stringer lost in 2005 to Mekhi Phifer FOR ER. Phifer had won the previous year as well Bunk lost in 2007 to Omar Epps for House. Epps then went on to win a second year in a row because you know...NAACP awards voters apparently only watched/watch network tv. Omar lost in 2009 to TAYE FREAKING DIGGS for Private F#####G Practice! Outstanding actor in a drama series Bunk lost in 2004 to Steve Harris for The Practice. Omar lost in 2007 to Isaiah Washington for Grey's Anatomy. Isaiah who? Oh yeah the guy that won the award two years in a row then proceeded to get fired from Grey's Anatomy for comments he made about his co-stars and other crap he pulled. I mean it's one thing to get dissed by The Emmy's and The Golden Globes (It seriously hurts my heart that Grey's Anatomy actually got nominated in 2005 and won in 2006, and Big Love, another HBO show got nominated in 2006 and 2007) BUT Et tu NAACP Image awards?
Saw an episode of Anthony Bourdain No Reservations where he went to Brooklyn. Michael K. Williams was showing him around and Jamie Hector was on there as well.
^^ Perhaps they thought that violence and crime of the Wire showed black people living in the projects in a bad light and wanted to have something more uplifting?? Idk, still ridiculous IMO. I mean, Grey's Anatonomy and Soul Food winning it over the Wire is a joke.
Finally got around to watching the show (awesome show btw) I had never seen Stringer in any other shows or movies but thought he was fantastic. I had no idea he was a wanka. Hiding that accent. Crazy talented.
