    Manny,

I've been listening to Interpol for a few days now. These guys are just great. Everything flows so smoothly. I think it will have heavy rotation in my cd changer for a long time. Thanks for passing on this great band to another rock fan.

    No problem man.

I tell you what helps me learn about new artists more than anything: going to Amazon.com and looking at the "similar artists" or "listmania lists".

    For example,

Check out this link, specifically the "Customers who bought this title also bought:"

Yea, Palm, I use allmusic about as much as I do with Amazon. I use Amazon more because I can read about what others have to say in comparing these bands plus that is where I buy all my CDs from!:D

BTW - do you have any CDs by Death Cab for Cutie or "Give Up" by the Postal Service?

I have been looking at getting something by them for some time, but wanted to know what you thought about them.

You along with rudager and pele are posters that I always enjoy reading your music posts because you guys all like Indie Rock.

What I like most about allmusic is that I can check out a bands backcatalogue which is sometimes not complete at places like amazon. Or when I want to buy a CD from a band with many records out and I am not sure which one to buy, I can check the rating (which is kind of the same when you check peoples posts on certain records). I buy my stuff on a swiss-site called www.cede.ch which is excellent and has also space to place personal comments. Also I got the CD within 2-3 days and do not have to pay by creditcard, instead they send an invoice with like 20days time for payment. This broke my neck some years ago since I ordered and ordered and could pay afterwards. Now I am a dead customer and have to order all the CD's under my girlfriends name.

To your question. I have the "Transatlanticism" record from Death Cab for Cutie and it is,............good. Not great in my opinion but solid and good. Never got an ear on Postal Service but I heard their record "Give up" must be great! Some say it is "Erland Oye meets New Order" or the better "Death Cab for Cutie", etc.
I heard they have some more positive moments then DCFC.

Alot of people swear for "the weakerthans" which I also only heard once in the background. So no extra info on that one.

If you like stuff like this you gotta check out these bands:

    Pinback
    the Wrens
    King Creosote (my actual favourite)
    Sun Kill Moon

oh yes and by the way, thanks for the flowers :)

oh well, then Slayer would kick anyones ass.

Except of the drums/guitar/bass/vocals thing I wouldn't put Turbonegro and the Hellacopters in the same pot as the Strokes.

It's like Led Zep compared to Black Sab or finesse versus sheeeeeer power.

    light beer versus beer

    cocaine versus pills

    heroin versus morphine

    shaved versus unshaved

ah whatever, all three great bands.

    Palm,

I'll check those bands out - thanks for the recommendations.

One more band to ask you about and I promise that I won't bug you about anymore (at least today!) and that is Modest Mouse.

Do you have anything by them? If you do, who do you think they sound like?

    Manny,

Feel free to discount my opinion since we haven't talked music all that much, except that we shared some of the same musicians in the 'name your own all-star band' thread. But you've mentioned some of the music I've been listening to a lot lately.

Postal Service, of course has part of Death Cab for Cutie in it, and is top notch. I liked it well enough from the get go, but then the more I listened, the sweeter it got. It does have a real 80's new order kind of feel to it, even though it's not retro at all. It's just something about the 'attitude' for lack of a better word. I got the album last fall, but don't listen to it all that much anymore. I do hear one of the songs on the radio from time to time.

Modest Mouse - This band is good, sometimes close to brilliant, but not always consistant. When they are on it's fantastic, original, and very pleasing. Their new single, 'Float On' is different from their older music, and is pretty solid. It kind of reminds me of early Talking Heads. I don't think it quite matches their older stuff at it's best, but I will most likely be getting the new album. They have a few songs on Itunes if you want to sample them, and then decide.

I'll second the praise for Give Up, though it does drag a bit in the middle. The first two tracks (the first two singles) are stunning, as well as Brand New Colony.

Get The Moon and Antarctica by Modest Mouse. It's very good, though a bit long, and if you've never heard them at all, you may have a hard time getting used to Brock's voice, which is strained--and he sings with a lisp!

I wasn't too hot on Transatlanticism at first, but when I came back to it I really began to enjoy most of it. I'll definitely look out for their previous album, which is supposedly better...

While I'm here I'll add a couple more which have pushed their way into my rotation:

Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days: probably my favorite artist right now--and he's coming to Rudyard's in April!

Stars - Heart: bought it because they put on a great show opening for Broken Social Scene Saturday, and I the drummer seemed like a really nice guy when I spoke to him at the bar; it's damn good, too.

Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands: basically just guitar and vocals. You're the resident DMB fan, right, Manny? This guy sounds just like Dave, only talented! :p

Sufjan Stevens - Greetings from Michigan! The Great Lake State: simply gorgeous.

I'd never heard of BPB, so I looked him up. Sounds somewhat similar in description, though Sam Beam's voice is hushed and gentle, rarely falling above a whisper. It's very lo-fi stuff (though the new album is crystal clear) and up until the latest LP the only instruments used were acoustic guitar, dobro, and banjo. Now, there's a little percussion, a mandolin here and there, and--to my shock--one piano!

Lyrically, he reflects on love and religion mostly, but totally without any pretentiousness or cliches. I don't hesitate in calling him a true poet.

I'll tell you how I got into I&W, for jollies. I was doing the crossword at work, and I suddenly went into a trance because of this incredibly peaceful music on the radio. I stared ahead until the song ended, then called up the station to ask who it was, and ordered the CDs when I got home. I've never been effected by background music like that before. Check out http://www.subpop.com/scripts/main/multimedia.php?key=format&value=mp3 for some samples. They aren't his best tracks, but they're pretty great. And they have the two best Postal Service songs. :)

...or you could just buy anything that pitchfork media has ever put on a "best of" list - it's all pretty much the same stuff.
