My favorite line: [rquoter]We will restore science to its rightful place..[/rquoter] No shout out for Buddhists? [rquoter]We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. [/rquoter]
Speech didn't really do anything for me. Maybe I was expecting too much? The real question is....does anyone have a link to the text of that bizarre poem after the speech? I've been looking all day but can't seem to find it. That was pure comedy GOLD.
I was in the car and trying to hear it on radio. That pedophile junkie Limbaugh was doing a running Mystery Science Theater heckling act only without the humor in REAL TIME. And that's fine...his audience probably ate it up with a spoon, but it is kind of funny after 8 years of bleating about any criticism of the President being disloyal and unamerican. I finally found the speech on Pacifica minus the Don Rickles schtick.
Roberts messed it up. http://rawstory.com/news/2008/CNN_Roberts_screwed_up_oath_of_0120.html According to the Constitution, the oath begins, "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States" but instead Roberts said, "...that I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully..."
Perhaps if he were older, he would have realized that Obama is the 43rd American to take the oath of office (Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th president). From the speech: Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.
I think that poem is better written than read aloud. I thought it was hilarious when she was reading it, but it doesn't look so bad.
The speech was ok at best, not bad...........maybe a little too much gloom and doom, but overall he did well. It's tough for him right now, because he has to somehow add some reality to everyone's expectations right now.....because he has a tough road ahead and people believe he has all the answers........I wish him the best, because he needs to succeed.
Childish? You insult children everywhere when you call Bigtexxxxxx childish. He is more of a moron these days.
Interesting....I read something with my class today that referred to Obama as the soon-to-be 44th president, too. I understand what you are saying, though.
This speech was extremely important, and very good, imo. It establishes the beliefs and understandings that Obama and his administration are using as their starting point, and it outlines a vision for the future. As every project manager will tell you, it’s important to keep talking about and reinforcing the key objectives of the project, and the main focal point. On big projects it’s easy for team members to lose focus and head off on tangents. I had one top PM from a big EPC company tell me once that his most important job was getting everyone heading in the same direction, and then getting out of their way, and then to circle the herd and nip at the heels of anyone who started wandering off in a different direction. It will be interesting to follow Obama’s initiatives and see how they flow from what was said in this speech.
The emperor's new clothes are so magnificent, no? At least he was cognizant of the number of presidents we've had, o wait. "America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebearers, and true to our founding documents." No, we haven't. "We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost." Why do we need to build roads and bridges while our country's economy is at its lowest point? Ever hear of the Trans-Texas Corridor aka NAFTA superhighway? The part about using technology in health care is basically to take away what privacy you have left, and give the government access to your health records and further the agenda to fit human beings with microchips. "We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories." And tax the bejeezus out of you with insane carbon taxes. "As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: Know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more." Except, of course, Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan. And when are you planning on repealing the Patriot Act, Pres. Obama? "To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds." First of all, we don't even have clean water in America (only a few countries do), and why don't you start by feeding the poor here? But I guess I'm too dimwitted to look past all the empty rhetoric I'm reading here.
