discussing the essay at https://andrewsullivan.substack.com/p/the-roots-of-wokeness and the essay by Lindsay ("No, the Woke Won’t Debate You. Here’s Why") is excellent, at https://newdiscourses.com/2020/07/woke-wont-debate-you-heres-why
Is every issue open for debate? I think most people would say no. There is a finite range of things that can be debated in polite society. The proposition “The Jews are an inferior race of people and the Holocaust was justified” is not generally considered up for debate. So, where the second article claims that an intrinsic feature of Woke culture is to deny the legitimacy of debate, I think it’s more denying the legitimacy of debate for certain issues they consider to be beyond the range of things that should be debated. So, how do we determine the boundaries of what is acceptable to debate?
Apparently this Pinker guy has limitations on whom he is willing to debate or hear criticism from so I'm assuming this guy's b****ing is... In bad faith(that's for you @Os Trigonum )
I would defend Pinker in that Twitter is not a constructive medium for debate. It’s pretty awful in that regard, actually.
I know this is an older resurrected topic, but why shouldn't everything be up for debate? "The Holocaust was justified" debate shouldn't take too much time or effort, and would end in any rational person to coming to a certain conclusion.
