Generally I agree with you, but I want a left shift to balance out the McCarthiast type of direction we have going here.

Our country is strange we go from far left to far right, back and forth the pendulum swings.

It is time to go back to the left.......I just wish at some point someone in the middle could grab it and hold it in place.

But they do have a pretty solid grip on the foreign policy of the GOP, which is considered "the right".

In his assessment of Russia, he said that Russia had no respect for international law and had invaded a small country for oil supply. Sounds very familiar. I can think of 77,000 civilians, in another small country just 2,700 miles from texas, that could have used his "prayers and solidarity."

I can't believe people go for this crap.

I thought Palin's speech was good for what it was. I thought this one was not so good.

I agree with roju that much of what he said could have been uttered by a Dem... seriously, change? There was also too much playing to the flag... it is clear they will try and make this about personality instead of issues.

I suspect he will bring a few Repubs home and tighten the race a bit, but I don't think anything this week changes the fundamentals.

And from here on out, McCain enters a money hole and has to depend on the RNC to get his message out while Obama can spend anywhere. He also has a VP nominee who is more popular than him within his own party... and I suspect Palin will be working for herself as much or more than him.

Now, this is funny... the green screen has been explained:

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/213806.php

Basically, the techies were supposed to get a picture of the Walter Reed veteran's hospital... but I guess they did a google search and got some random Walter Reed Middle School instead (which had the green grass that ended up the background behind McCain).

After both conventions I'm sorely tempted to write in Ron Paul.

McCain TV Ratings Beat Obama in Preliminary Numbers

    By Andrew Krukowski

Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.

Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.

NBC’s coverage of Sen. McCain’s speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obama’s speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country.

ABC’s showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS’ coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.

Following the NFL opener is a huge sign those numbers won't mean much.

Plus, based on how McCain did, I don't think more people seeing his speech may be a good thing for him.

Here are the CNN report cards from both speeches:
    McCain
    Obama

Interestingly, McCain's speech got a 'C' from readers while Obama's got an 'A.' But we all know that people thought Kerry won his debates with Bush, and then still voted for W.

I had somewhat the reverse view where I would give the McCain speech an 'A' and the Obama speech a 'B'. I thinking about it though my view might be colored by expectations. I expect Obama to have lofty rhetoric so I was taken a little back by how workman like his speech was and how he took it to McCain. I expect McCain to be rather flat and to be somewhat mean so I was surprised when he did manage to rouse, talk about loftier ideals and was limited in his attacks on Obama.
