Also Dalembert is a pretty athletic switching over. This isn't a situation where a slow Center was switching over.
McGrady on Dalembert is a mismatch if he beats him off the dribble, not if T-Mac is shooting a jumper. If the plan was to create the mismatch then T-Mac needed to go to the basket immediately after the switch.
Agreed. Not sure why people are creating issues and scrutinizing the last play so much when the game itself shouldn't have been close. Once TMac wasn't knocking down his heat checks he went into self destruct mode and the team went down with him, as they always do. Never have I seen the team as a whole display a sense of urgency with TMac on the court this year.
Dalembert is a pretty quick Center. At this point in T-mac career I think he would of struggled to drive against Dalembert. Probably would of been a block just like his jumper was blocked. Especially with 5 seconds left because Dalembert knows T-mac only option is to shoot it since he doesn't have to worry about Yao now.
I guess ... I guess my frustation goes past that one play. You could probably make a 5-minute blooper reel of Yao in this game.
Then I don't see what the point is with switching Dalembert onto T-Mac. Either way there's no way anybody should have been taking long jumpers when the difference was only two points.
At the end of games, you put the ball in the hands of your best playmaker. Adelman knows his personnel, and he knows that person is McGrady.
That is what I have been saying all night. It was a horrible playcall. I thought it should of been thrown to Yao in the post but I'm not the coach.
good point. but i made a generalization. which is why i didnt use names. but in tmac's case, i wouldnt ask him to run around the half court with screens set up everywhere. id set up screens where he wont run that much but should give him a little bit clearance. id rather have a small SF/PF on tmac. tmac wont attack the basket. he's gonna shoot the ball. why? referees arent gonna call a whistle with 5secs left even if you get murdered attacking the basket. tmac knows that. with a smaller guy on him, he'll get a clearer shot, and probably not even get blocked. but with dalembert, he's pretty agile for a big guy, and pretty long which made it pretty difficult for tmac to get around him. badgerfan mentioned a great example of using your PF to set the pick. yao doesnt have to move and all he has to do is to keep his eyes on the ball and get that rebound. but yeah, the PnR with yao couldve worked if it were executed like clockwork. they need to practice that more.
And McGrady made a horrible call. He should have drove immediately and dished. Calling out Yao for a high pick and roll? The Rockets got what they deserved.
Like I said earlier it should of been an Iso play for T-mac if you wanted him to go for the win. If T-mac is the one that called for the pic instead of Adelman then it was a dumb decision by T-mac. If you wanted to tie it up throw it in to Yao and let him work.
Well, if the center has to play off him to not allow penetration, than he could get an uncontested jumper. Dalembert was able to quickly close out, and McGrady didn't feel he had the opening going to his left that he could explode through. They defended it well, McGrady was forced to take a contested shot, and we lost. That happens sometimes, even if the play call is a sound one. LIke I said, it shouldn't have come to a final play.
You're right. I think Adelman made a mistake there. Better to have tmac drive and dish to yao like he use to with JVG. Or if the drive isn't there than you can pass it into yao. If Yao is double teamed swing it to the open shooter and then shoot it. Why do a pick and roll with yao with 5 seconds left????? Then you are forced into a contested jumper. Just a dumb play to call with that little time left.
Well, you let that slide because Shaq is too busy dominating the game in so many other ways. No one on our team dominates on a consistent basis. Sometimes Kobe has a poor shot selection and Lebron isn't a great shooter but hey, they dominate. I think our players need to realize they aren't good enough to let the little things slide.
What makes you think McGrady called Yao for a pick and roll? I imagine that was the play call out of the time out. In fact, I know it was. Adelman said so in the press conference that they talked about the 76ers switching on the play. That's exactly what the Rockets wanted, but the other team happened to defend it well.
Most good coaches would set a screen (or double screen) for the best *shooter* on the team for a three or a close two. Too bad we have Idleman.
It was just mind boggling my friend. But you know it shouldn't have came down to this. We missed easy shot after easy shot. And man those rebounds that Yao failed to grab really hurt us in the 4th.
