So here are the cliff notes The people that work at Starbucks are getting annoyed with customers who order a cheaper version of the drink for under two bucks, ask for it in a large cup and then load up with half and half from the pitchers on the side. They call them "ghetto lattes" You can read their opinions here http://starbucksgossip.com/ Scroll down to A reader asks: "Is it fair for a customer to order a 'ghetto-latte'?" Part of me wants to slap these *%$^& in the face. The arrogance from some of these chumps is amazing. Their Company issued a statement that the customer is always right and to never say no to them. If the Corporate office doesn't have a problem then STFU and serve the guy what he orders. When I had a low paying job when I was younger I never cared. Perfect example. Back in the mid 90's red an yellow bell peppers were for some crazy reason 6.99 a pound one year. I thought it was smart of customers to go to the salad bar and take what they needed an only pay 4.99. Anyhow, Starbucks is making a killing at 2 bucks a cup let alone the 4 I pay for my frappucinos. I mean I don't make ghetto lattes but if the guy in front of me wants to, morepower to him.
My friend needs more cream for some reason I forgot but he says it's medical. Anyways he told me the employee at Starbucks made fun of him cause he asked for a larger cup size than he had ordered. When he told her why she felt so bad she didn't charge him. Now that I think about it he may have no medical problem and he was really getting a ghetto latte.
So, I take it by the "ghetto latte" moniker, that this is being done mostly by black customers? Perhaps Starbucks should worry more about racist employees.
Ghetto Lattes?? Yeah....for $3.00 for a cup of coffee and they are complaining about getting an extra inch of paper and an extra inch or two of coffee??
I think the regular 'coffee of the day' is more like $1.50 for a cup of coffee. My brother orders that all the time, it's not because he's being cheap either, he just likes 'grande' coffee in a 'viente' cup, and he gets it like 2-3 times a day. Now, my brother is neither Black nor 'ghetto', so he might not fit the profile...
Why do Starbuck employees care? Starbuck managers should care. Am I missing something? Technically, pouring cold milk into a half cup of coffee isn't a latte. In Europe you'd probably be laughed out of town for that as they take their coffee more seriously there. Europeans wouldn't ever drink coffee from a paper cup. So if somebody wants to make a "ghetto latte" ...let them. Then afterwards they can go buy a slim jim and stick it on a cracker and call that a "ghetto burger."
Uh, yeah. It's when you get all of the crap that is half milk. I don't understand why people like latte's. Its coffee flavored milk. If I'm gonna drink coffee, which I do often, I want coffee and I don't want sugar or cream or any of that other crap in it. On top of that, they charge you out the ass for it. $4 for a latte or mocha? Insane. A venti coffeee is $1.80.
Take a coffee cup and pour it 3/4 full of milk. Microwave on high for 100 seconds. Add 2 equal and a scoop of instant coffee. Microwave for 30 seconds. pour a teaspoon of caramel, hazelnut, or vanilla syrup (like that crap they use at Starbucks and you can buy it anywhere) in it. That stuff is gooooooood.
I used to just mix two cups worth of coffee with a hot cocoa packet. That stuff was good, but at 120 calories per pop, it wasn't good for my gut...
I was thinking the same thing...I don't drink coffee, but if I pay for it, who cares what I do with it...
hehe...I own a few coffee shops so I can kind of relate with this situation. If Corporate Starbucks doesn't care then I don't understand why the employees are getting pissed. I don't think a "ghetto latte" is coffee at all. What these people must be doing is ordering a single, double or triple shot of espresso. Then asking for it in a larger cup, 12 oz. or more. They are suppose to come in an 8 oz cup. Might even ask for it over ice, in which case you have to give a bigger cup. Then they go on the side and fill it up with h&h, skim or whole milk. It pisses the crap out of me to. I won't be making a dime out of a customer that does that. That said, less then 1 percent of the customers do that and it's just not worth the hassel or negative publicity that we would get for arguing with these cheap bastards. My employees are instructed to just let it go, but I know they dont like it either. I don't know about Starbucks, and our prices are pretty similar to Starbucks, but the profit margin is not exactly amazing in the coffee biz. Its a struggle to keep the food cost below 35%. So a drink might be four dollars, but it does not mean that we are making $3.00 on it either.
So is "ghetto latte" the official word used by Starbucks. I guess next time I go into Starbucks, I'll just say "one ghetto latte, please."
I love coffee, but when I go to Starbucks I get either the iced or hot black tea. Oh that is some good ****...
Actually, a real latte is made from expresso and the milk is frothed in. Very rarely is it made correctly in the states. Even if the coffee shop goes through the motions, the "foam" is terrible as is the expresso. I caught one coffee shop giving me pre-made expresso. In American terms, thats like getting a burger thats been sitting there for 30 minutes under a warmer vs. a burger right off the grill. ANYWAY, if you ever taste a legit latte, you might understand the concept better.
I understand what a real latte is. What I'm saying is that most people pay $4 for coffee flavored milk.
They might as well start rationing out half & half like McDonald's does sauce for their chicken nuggets. Or limit the amount of ketchup someone can eat with their fries or hamburger. Or rather, just mix the coffee for them ahead of time and don't give the customer a choice. Or maybe have the customer start bringing their own half & half and their own big cup. See how ridiculous this is?
