Nope, I haven't heard any word on it yet. We got this pick for Mirsad Turksan, and I don't think its conditional. I thought I'd make a thread with the reasons why, and why not the Pistons would give it to us.

    The Case For-
Hill seems to be looking elsewhere. If Hill goes, the team is doomed. Rose is doubtful. Taylor wouldn't be worth much. This team becomes top 5 pick if Hill goes, and it'll be awhile to get out. They have till 02 I believe. They're trying to win now, and #14 is not likely to be much of an impact player. It would relieve them of the necessity. Another possible factor is new management, headed by Dumars. Dumars was a 2nd round pick, so maybe he doesn't value position that much?

    The Case Against-
It's a relatively high pick. The pick could be someone who dropped out of lottery, or could give them a local star (Crawford, Peterson, Cleaves). Also would be useful trade bait to get what they want. They can still wait to give it to Houston. They could get a "replacement" for Hill, while otherwise, they'd be stuck with a hole in their lineup.

This pick is very interesting to watch as a Rockets fan. If we get it this year, we obviously made a great trade (Turksan for #14), and could have several players-a faller, or a guy like Mo Pete, Etan Thomas, maybe Deshawn, Richardson, etc. And we could gamble as we are a young team still. If we wait, and Hill goes....we're looking at a GREAT pick. Next year's draft is super deep, with 3 maybe more star big men (Woods, Curry, Chandler). We'd probably get it the year after next, and right now its hard to gauge how good that class will be.

So do you want it this year? Who would you want with the pick?

I thought it was only 2 more years? When did it become 3? Isn't today the last day to convey picks?

Next year would be more ideal as Hill would be leaving not to mention a deeper draft. However, 14th is pretty high and I wouldn't mind it at all.

I say roll the dice with the 14th and select Stevenson. I'm just drooling over a Francis/Stevenson backcourt.

maybe next year is the last year, I was just guessing on that.

If we had #9 and #14, I'd probably go Moiso-Stevenson. I think Orlando may gamble on Stevenson at #13, in that case, I'd drool over a draft of Dermarr and Etan Thomas.

It depends on who they draft at #9. If they get Johnson or Miller I would like to see them draft Etan Thomas. If they go big and get Moiso then I would like to see them gamble on Stevenson if he is available. If not I also like Crawford and Mason.

They had four years(drafts) to give us the pick. This is the second draft they have not given it to us so they have either next year or the next. If we don't get it this year then we won't get it next year either because Detroit is lottery bound most likely and then the next year your guess is as good as mine how good they will be. It all hinges on Grant Hill though. If he goes we're possibly looking at the lottery again in 2 years if he goes. I think he's gone to the Bulls or Orlando.

NIKE: Do the Pistons have to give us their own pick or can they just trade for a crap pick, and then convey that pick to us?

I believe the deadline has passed for teams to convey picks- just as Orlando has not conveyed any to us, I think we can safely say that if we haven't heard about the Detroit pick, we ain't getting it.

According to Dennis Lindsey on the radio earlier this week, teams have to convey (or not convey) picks in writing. They have received a letter from Orlando stating that the pick will not be conveyed this year. I image Detroit must do the same.

Joe Dumars was the 18th pick in the 1985 first round draft (1 spot ahead of our #19 pick ) http://www.foxsports.com/nbadraft99/1985_draft.sml If Joe would have fallen to us at #19, we might not have lost to the Celtics in 86.

Hey, first off Hill has been rumored to be an absolute lock to sign in any of about 5 different places. What does that tell you? No one has a clue where he lands. The odds are still on him staying in Detroit for one more season to move up a salary level plateau (not to mention that gives him every out if he leaves next season from a PR perspective).

Second, I don't know that the pick has to be Detroit's, but even if it does, Detroit has a very nice pick coming from Vancouver before they have to give up the pick to Houston. In other words, even a worse case scenario leaves them with a lottery or near lottery pick no matter what because they'll have more than one pick in a draft.

It makes no logical sense for them to give up the 14th pick in this draft. It won't happen.

I'm agreeing with Hobbs. Detroit will sign Grant Hill this year (to probably a one year contract), and they will keep this pick. They need to try and get someone to compliment Hill. If not, the team doesn't improve at all. They will be too worried about signing Hill to get any other quality free agent. This will probably go on into the summer, and by the time Hill signs a one year deal, all good free agents will be gone. This glimpse of possible future events will make Detroit keep the pick to try and get lucky with someone who will make an impact. Hill will most likely bolt the year after because I really don't think Detroit will get that much better and Hill wants a chance to actually win a championship. We're looking at getting a really nice pick in the next year or two. We definitely got a steal on the Mirsad Turksan (spelling?) thing, where-as we will definitely get screwed on the Orlando pick. They probably won't see the lottery before they have to give up a pick to us so the one they do give us will be a really late 1st rounder.
