I agree. But welcome to the nature of Houston sports. Nobody gives a damn unless you are winning, especially with the Rockets. I personally can't stand bandwagon fans but I guess those fans are better than no fans? The Rockets are the first sports team in Houston win a major title and the team that the city cares less about.
This isn't the English Premier League, where people live and die by their team. This is America, where instant gratification is the soup de jour. I don't see the point of starting an entire new thread about something we've probably rehashed 1000 times. Bandwagon fans are the way American sports make money. Plain and simple. Live with it.
That happens everywhere. People lose interest when a team isn't successful. The guys on this team are so easy to root for, now that those fans have found them, I would imagine they will stick around for a while.
There was some guy sitting behind me with his girlfriend at Saturday night's game, and he was trying to tell her the story of "13 in 35" in great detail, like he was an expert on the subject. Except, he basically ended up telling her the story of "18 in 60" or something closer to that. He was just sprinkling in nonexistent layups and dunks as needed. I could handle bandwagon fans a lot easier if they didn't spread their lies!
Come on people, just because you consider yourself a die hard, does not mean there is no room for casual fans. I am just happy that people have taken notice of the Rockets again....and even more happy the team has given people something to really get behind. Big deal if the new or casual fans don't know all the history.... Fandom...is a personal thing....just enjoy that people are finally talking Rockets again. DD
If this means the lower bowls are full at tipoff(Shane even referenced this in a postgame interview Saturday) and the fans are rowdy the entire game, then bring on the bandwagoners.
Funny thing about that game was that like what maybe 5-7 thousand people were actually there if that when it happened? it seems like now all of houston stayed for that game from all the people who said they were there. yeah i dont care for bandwagoners...i live in LA the place where bandwagoning happens....heck I saw two McGrady jerseys yesterday I am wearing my rockets shirt as I normally do and one guy pointed at me and was like "yeah!" I looked at him and was like what you think of the game last night (NO game) and he was like "oh what teams were playing?" #$@%#$%@#$!!!
I am guilty of being a bandwagon Astros fan. For all those exciting playoff series vs. the Cardinals and the World Series 2005, I was a temporary Astros fan and then I've stopped watching ever sense. Maybe the season is too long, maybe the games are too boring, or maybe I just simply don't have the passion for baseball. Nevertheless, as many people have already mentioned... it is natural for people to start rooting for a team when they are winning. My girlfriend has recently gotten into the Rockets. She's not even from the US and didn't know anything about basketball as of a few months ago (asking questions like "Is T-Mac #1?"). Now... she would make surprising comments like: "Why do the Rockets struggle in the 4th quarter or when they get a big lead?" or "Man, Landry and Scola both hustle and play with a lot of energy" out of nowhere. Even though she "jumped on the bandwagon", I think this 18 game winning streak has pushed her closer to being a real Rockets fan...
Houston Fans are Bandwagon Fans. Remember when Astros made it to the world series. Everyone Started to Cheering for them Half of the city didn't watch them play the season.
Not everywhere. Look at the Knicks and their fans. Sure it's in New York but they continue to get great crowds no matter how bad the team has been. If the Rockets had the Knicks record, the TC would be damn near empty. They've only won one title so it's not like they have a historic background like the Celtics or Lakers.
That's because of their population. They have a higher number of die hards because there are more people there. It's true in Cincinnati, its true in Cleveland, its true in St. Louis, its true in Pittsburgh. Those are the only towns I have experience with other than Houston but I think that's a pretty good indication that you aren't alone.
Ok, other than the largest market in the country, it's true. There are very few exceptions across all pro sports to the truth that if you win, people pay to show up...if you don't, they don't bother.
I remember back in mid January, no one called the radio stations about the Rocket"s" it was all about the Rocket. ALL DAY. In a way I'm glad all the calls now are about the Rocket"s" and not Roger, no matter how fake or pretentious they may seem. gives the talk show hosts more reason to talk about the Rockets. Steriods in baseball=dead horse.
Always happens, so no big surprise. I wear some Rockets gear from time to time up here in Dallas and when the team is doing ok or even when they are playing solidly like last year, nothing much in terms of comments. Last couple of times since the streak, I'm getting comments all the time now. Just the way of the world. Just how people would give me crap when the Roxs went down against the Suns in the first 2 title runs only to have those people switch once they completed the comeback....
if you want to humor yourself and see who's jumped on the bandwagon when you go to the Rockets game tonight and on, hangout at the corner of the store where they have the Bonzi and Mike James jerseys on clearance and watch the people that think they are getting a bargain I did this last Saturday, and I just wanted to laugh in their face....
