    A way to get McDyess?

If we wanted to get McDyess this year with out giving up any of our MLE couldn't we get Denver to do a sign and trade with us for a portion of our trade exception and our 2nd round pick for their help?

This way we would still have our entire MLE to lure Brent Barry to the Rockets.

    Barry / Ollie
    JJ / Barry
    McGrady / Boki
    McDyess / MoT
    Yao Ming

Perhaps you should have titled your thread

"A way to get head lice"

because that's easier to get excited about than washed-up broken down McDyess.

McDyess should consider playing in the wheelchair league next year.

It's actually Phoenix that has McDyess' rights ... I doubt they would do anything to ease the Rockets' cap, especially since they don't want to take on any salary themselves.

If you could get McDyess for half the MLE then I would do it. Use the other half for someone such as Derek Fisher and you could fill two holes on the roster if we got T-Mac.

Like most players who rely heavily on athletic ability, Mcdyess is just about finished after he destroyed his knees.

Denver is one of the teams going after Barry, I don't see why they would trade him to us for some money they don't need (they could always use more, but Barry is more valuable to them right now) and a pick worth nothing.

I think Barry should be our first priority but if we could get McDyess cheap for a couple of years it could possibly pay off.

HE is only 29 and there is a chance that rehab has made him stronger...maybe not as strong as he once was, but as good as he was I think the risk is more than worth it as long as we are not risking too much.

    Clutch -
What you're stating is true except that Dice hits PHX's cap for 150% of $13.5m until he is re-signed or renounced. IOW, until McDyess is handled there is no way PHX can participate in the Kobe Sweepstakes. Or any other FA for that matter.

IMHO, the Rox can get McDyess for a vet minimum contract ($1+m) just like the Faker$ got Malone.

    Gater,

If Dyess wants more than the vet minimum, would it be possible to use a chunk of our TE in a S&T deal with Phoenix?

Absolutely. We could trade a draft pick for McDyess as long as his starting salary is less than or equal to the TE. Assuming it's a future draft pick, it would have zero effect on Phoenix's cap for next season. From purely the aspects of the deal, Phoenix gets a free draft pick with no cap implication. The only downside is that they potentially strengthen a Western Conference rival.

Are you envisioning using the MCE for Barry? An offseason where we acquired McGrady, Brent Barry, Howard, McDyess, Ollie, DeClerq and Lue would be pretty amazing.

That is exactly what I was thinking. We could even reverse it and use the trade exception and a 2nd rounder on Barry so we could give him more money but for fewer years. Then offer McDyess the vet minimum if he is serious abou coming to Houston.

If we could get him for cheap the gamble would be worth it. He should at least be a servicable backup and could potentially be a solid starter. I rember him having a pretty good 15-18 ft jumpshot and he may still be able to rebound.

With so many teams having cap room if Dice checks out ok I see him getting the MLE, or close to it.

I would happily 'roll the dice' but how many questionable 4s can one team suit up?

Is there a Mo trade out there?

I doubt McDyess is really in Phoenix's plans, so I think they'll give him a "take it or leave it" offer at the beginning of free agency, and if he declines, they'll renounce him. They can do their negotiations with other free agents, and renounce him if/when they're ready to sign them.

Personally, I see PF as our only real position of depth, with Howard, Taylor, and Weatherspoon. I see much more pressing needs than another one, especially one coming off serious injuries; I'd be willing to throw the million dollar exception at him, but I wouldn't spend a good chunk of the TE on him, even.

This offseason is a couple signings away (Barry, Fisher, or NVE, and someone else) from being absolutely amazing.

I'd love to see McDyess as a Rocket for the veterans minimum. Maybe a bit more than that. Anything over 2 million a year would be going over-board as injury prone as he is. For 2 million or under I'd take the gamble.

    Will we steal McDyess....

Will we steal McDyess at the end of the summer. He is a free agent. He lives in Houston. He is just coming off a major injury. We can get him at good value and he wants to win at this stage of his career.

I think we steal him as surprise at the end of the summer.
