    Yesterday was the 200th anniversary of the first performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, arguably (certainly in my book) the greatest piece of music ever composed. It's influence is profound musically, socially, culturally, politically, psychologically, globally. The last movement is the music of revolutions and celebrations. If there is a truer example of genius, I have yet to find it.

    Here's the Orchester Wiener Akademie doing their best to recreate the original concert with vintage instruments, the same number of musicians, and seating arrangements taken from first-hand accounts. Note that the original concert had some of Beethoven's earlier pieces played before the 9th, which starts at 1:39.

    Beethoven conducts the 9th from the movie “Immortal Beloved”


    Also the “Ode to Joy” is the anthem for the EU.
