Does not cut it in today's NBA. Harping on our coach for our offensive ineptitude is missing the bigger picture with our Rockets.

Today's NBA rules favors one attribute. Speed. Of this, we have NONE. Our roster is built using infantry while everyone else is stocking up on the cavalry. In building according to JVG's specifications, we continuously emphasized basketball "smarts", defense, and effort over all other aspects including talent, SPEED, and athleticism. Ideally, a balance needed to be struck, but it was clear that when a player did not fit the "JVG" mold, he was either underutilized, complained about, or eventually shipped out. JVG was not in the business of "pampering kids" while the "men" went out to play the game. What resulted was a win now mentality that ultimately fell short, non-surprisingly due to it's quick-fix nature.

When someone tells me that the Rudy Gay trade was all about getting a proven veteran over an unproven rookie, my next question is always, "Why Shane Battier?" Shane fit all of the qualities that JVG cherished. Unfortunately, he also embodied none of the other qualities that have come to the forefront of today's game.

In the past, before zones, before no-handchecking, it was far more possible to field a lineup of one superstar who could break down the defense, and a bunch of roleplayers who fit this "JVG mold". It is far more important to have unselfish roleplayers when it is possible for a star to score 1-on-1 almost everytime down the floor. However, while in the past a team was only as good as it's strongest link, it is now clear that team's are really only as good as their weakest.

What we are doing now is playing "catch-up". It was clear that JVG's out-dated grind it out style of play was only going to get us so far, and had probably reached it's maximum utility last year when our roster had truly become his creation. As JVG's creation, the make-up of the team must change before we can really see RA's creation at work. Our best players after Tmac/Yao can not and should not be "JVG players". For one, we no longer have JVG as a coach, and two, these types of players are outdated using today's rules. What we need are confident and fast players, with athleticism as an added bonus.

i have to agree with this post, even the spurs who will often slow it down and methodically rip teams apart have maybe the fastest player in the league in parker, and a great athletic swingman in ginobili. lack of speed and athleticism killed us against dallas and utah in the playoffs and it was painful to watch.

i am so sad right now guys, i am starting to really believe we will not make the playoffs. :( before i didnt really believe it, but it looks like adelman really has no answers right now, and or there is nothing he can do to make square pegs fit into round holes. i cant believe i actually miss JVG right now, though i know deep down if we still had him we'd have a better record right now, but we would still lose in the first round because we just dont have the personnel to beat one of the top 4 teams. so maybe its better to suck right now and get a good draft pick

someone touched up on the tenatative part
    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=139699

Ironicallly this post seemed like it was posted last year and outdated not with the current times, until the end

On that I tend to agree. I think changing out one starter with one that reflects what Adelman's trying to accomplish would have a positive effect (If Adelman even knows what he's trying to accomplish that is). It was like the Texans bringing in Kubiak with David Carr still at qb, who he was to make into a solid performer. Except almost whole Rockets lineup besides Yao and McGrady is collectively a David Carr.

You have to consider the additions of Mike James, Scola, Francis, Bonzi coming back, and drafting Aaron Brooks as NON-Van Gundy moves though....they went with talent and name recognition but those players simultaneously aged rapidly in one year and declined. Give the Rockets front office an A for effort, just wished the players woulda come through...

It is too bad that ROx has heartless fans like you, just like Yao has heartless teammates in the game.

By the way, Yao will probably fade in several years. For a goos team, ROx need to tank more seasons than you thought

im not heartless man, i am realistic. these players don't, especially Yao, do not fit into adelmans system. yao needs to be down low, not running the high post. if we are going to get the most out of yao we cant do it with this system... this team is completely out of sync and i dont see any solution in sight right now. i am hoping for the best, but lets say we do start winning again, are we going to be good enough to beat anyone with this roster in a series ? like ive said many times before, in the playoffs is where all the holes in your team are exposed. we can turn it around and have a successful regular season, but realistically do we have the horses to compete with the big guns ? the team morale seems low, t-mac keeps getting hurt, no one can hit a shot, yao is frustrated, adelman seems clueless right now....it just doesnt look good for us right now. ive had high hopes for this team with the offseason we've had, but we are far too inconsistent. ive come to realization recently that RAFER ALSTON actually IS our best option at PG, and that makes me VERY sad. we still have the same problems as last year only NOW we are a poor 3 point shooting as well.

I think the problem is with the shooting. Yao CAN play well in RA's system. He has been doing well and he has created many open shots and indeed has got his teammates involved. They need to make the open shots. RA has to find a way to make that happen. Things will turn around when they shoot well. The problem with this ROX team is that some players have no sense of discipline to stick to the game plan. When they lead with a big margin, they start to shoot freely and lose the focus.
