Every year about this time (or rather about the time Wimbledon rolls around through the US Open), I really get to jonesin' to play some tennis. Trouble is....I live in Dallas. I grew up in Houston, and played all my life there (about 15 years). I was ranked in the top 50 in singles in boys 16's and 18's, and also my doubles partner and I were ranked as high as the number 2 team in high school. Blah blah blah....you don't need to hear all that. But after I moved to Dallas....I nearly stopped playing altogether.

Sooooooooooo.....it would seem the tennis scene is just not very strong nor prevalent here in Dallas. In Houston, I could scrounge up a partner anytime, anyday. Lots of courts, lots of clubs to play at, lots and lots of tournaments and leagues....even at the neighborhood level. Here? Nada! I know about 2 people that play here. No neighborhoods here have courts except the very affluent ones, and there's never anyone playing on them.

There is ONE tennis center close to my home where I could get plugged into a league or something. But man, it would sure be nice to know some people to shag some tennis balls with......

I did sign up on a website called Flex Tennis, where you can meet singles players for a match. But that freaked me out a bit when I got some emails from people wanting to play, and it was something like, "I'd like to meet for a match at some really private courts and late at night, since I am a student during the day." Uhhhhh....huh?

Anyone here live in the Dallas area AND play tennis? I assume I will hear crickets chirping soon on this. But just checking. Sorry for my rambling.

As an aside, anyone seen that Serbian player Ana Ivanovic? Smokin!

Hmmm...I would have pictured Dallas to be full of upper class douchebag snobs that play tennis. (Of course, I'm not calling you an upper class douchebag, HOOP-T...you're a middle class douchebag. :D)

Too bad you live in Dallas, I play regularly with a group on Sunday mornings at Rice University. You would be more than welcome to join us. Ana Ivanovic is smokin hot, I watched her play against Venus on TV over the weekend.

Thank you for recognizing that, and also clarifying. :D It would appear the uppr-class douchebags, as you say, play golf here.

    In any case........thanks again.

What time do you play? I will have to carefully consider travel time, since it's a 4 hour commute. Man, that train between DFW and Houston now makes perfect sense (reference "I want one of these.." thread).

    Poopy.

I guess you need to take up golf...or basketball. Of course, then you would have to put up with lower class douchebag Mavs fans wearing Nowitski jerseys.

Screw it, just move back to Houston....

Any single friends? My sister is an avid tennis player in Tyler and goes to Dallas all the time. Mixed doubles/double date? :)

Sorry, trying to find a man for my sister so she can get out of that ****hole called Tyler. Actually, it's not a ****hole, just her ex's family. Sorry for the derail, too.

I already play basketball.....and honestly it is kinda comforting when I take a Mavs fan to the rack or hit a J on one of them. But I digress.

As another aside....a friend of mine is in a bowling league. Their league name is "Le Bag de Douche." That just makes me giggle like a little girl. Well...in a manly sort of way.

Hmmmmm....interesting proposition. I don't have any single friends that play. So we have a problem that is twofold:

    1. If your sister is any good, she will likely not be interested in any friend I trot out onto the court because they play tennis at the level of Flavor Flav.

    2. My wife doesn't play, although she does own a tennis skirt. Don't ask. :)

I guess all of this could be worse. I could live in Tyler. ;)

I am fired up for Andy vs Roger tonight at the open

as far as playing tennis I might have gone a dozen or so times this summer, I really like it but the older I get the harder it is to find playing partners.

I play regularly here, twice a week. I just go to the tennis court in CyFair Middle school and play with random people. Some are good but most beginners, people who hold the racket in teh middle of the handle. :). And they don't wear proper attire, not even close. I'm talking about elderly indians, they wear their traditional everyday clothes. But still is fun exercise.

You forgot 3. You're scared to lose to a girl. :p And trust me, she'd be interested in friends if they suck at tennis. :D

I am too old to worry about losing to a girl....it might sting for about a half hour, and then I'd remember I am 34 and the glory days are over. That grim reality hits me every time I step onto a court of any sort.

I go home, feeling good about getting a workout.....I sit down, drink some water. Then I try to get up....my knee buckles.....I writhe in agony, etc.

OK, it's not that bad, but close.

Alas.....I suppose I'll join the tennis club and get into a couch potato league of some sort and play with a bunch of guys I don't know. That'll be a good way to get connected to some people that play.

You should put your sister on that marryourdaughter.com website. You might make a few bucks off it. :)

Hoop-T, we usually play at 7:30 or 8, so as long as you're up at 3:30 or so, it's a pretty reasonable commute.

i hear you.... i used to play a lot when i was younger, mainly league play. was pretty decent. just got back into playing earlier this year, but i haven't had many folks to play with lately. haven't even hit the court in almost 2 months

you could always join a club, i suppose. i play at the houstonian here, and even though i usually have someone to play with when i go, it wouldn't be hard finding someone if you needed a partner... especially if you start playing league or whatnot.

Well.....Haas (who beat Blake....grrrr) and Davydenko match starting up now. I think I'll live vicariously through them for about the next hour or so.

7:30 or 8, we play early because it gets too hot later in the morning. I've sent you a private message.
