I'm located in Austin, TX and use road runner cable. I play videogames on the PC, and notice I ping pretty well on most servers but I always end up getting packet loss. Downloading has never been a problem. I don't think it's any specific server I play on, or any specific game that causes the packetloss. I think it's pretty much my connection. I do a pretty consistent job of updating my spyware remover programs and currently have none on my computer. I also run a software firewall on my computer as well as an antivirus program which is up to date and scanned my computer as of last night. 0 viruses. My cable connection is shared on two computers and has a linksys router that's connected to the cable modem, in case that might cause any issues. My OS is Windows XP. So any advice on how to remove the packetloss since it appears to be coming from my end?
Run "tracert" from a command line prompt using the address that you are seeing the packet loss from. That might give you some indications as to where a networking problem might be occurring.
how much packet loss? it is normal to lose a certain percentage of your packets at any given time...it only becomes a problem when the percentage of PL becomes too great since a mechanism for resending packets is built in to the tcp/ip protocol...you dont even really notice it until a real problem occurs. a couple of tips to ensure your transmissions are as error free as possible.. check your connections to ensure they are tight/ fully plugged in make sure your cables dont run by a source of intereference (power supplies, flourescent lighting, etc.)..and that they are not kinked or wound up on themselves. a way to check to see if the router has anything to do with it is to plug directly from your PC to the cable modem and re-check to see if that effects your PL.
In game I get anywhere from 6-40% packet loss. It really becomes unbearable sometimes, and it happens in any server I join, empty or crowded.
I had some significant problems with Road Runner like that recently. They came out and put in a new modem and that helped. Apparently, when Road Runner went to this new "faster" internet service, they also added networks that would allow them to carry voice lines because they are going to get into the telecom business. If your modem isn't recent, it can cause problems due to compatibility issues. That is what my repair guy told me.
