Just wondering, but i saw an nba vintage game on tv today when they were teh San Diego Rockets and I just had to wonder how they got their team name. I mean why Rockets for San Diego. Did Rockets take off, land back there in the 60's. I am too young so I dont know? Ironic that they happened to move to space city where their name fit them even better.

Most team names in the NBA are pretty easy to figure out (the hawks i dont know yet---what is a pacers???) so i was jsut wondering about San Diego Rockets??

Check this link for an interesting article: http://www.nba.com/history/team_nicknames.html

As for the Pacers, I think its a "they set the pace for the rest of the league" type thing.

Pacers - Pace car in Indianapolis 500...that's what I always thought. Big on racing up there. Who knows if I'm right, but it sounds reasonable, right?

I too thought that the Pacers were named after their racing ties.
