Give the guy a break. Like Roc Paint said he's just come off a friggin' torn ACL. Do you guys expect him to run eight miles a day?!?! And come on, next season is half a year a way, that's plenty of time to get into decent shape. Do any of you realize how many calories playing an NBA game burns?! By mid-December he should be back to normal. I'm not a big fan of Mo, but geez, cut the guy a little slack. It's May for crying out loud. If he looks the same come August, then complain.
Give him a break??? How about give him some BRAKES...as in slow down when you hit the kitchen....this guy has obviously been eating like he is going to jail the next day...maybe there is more to the drug thing...
Actually, you can do WEIGHT BEARING exercises like swimming to keep the pounds off. Fat people are supposed to do weight bearing exercises to shed pounds until they can move onto things like bike, treadmill, eliptical, etc. Nothing kept him from hitting the pool to shed pounds. 1pnd of fat has 3500 calories. If Mo wants to burn 1pnd of fat a week he has to eat 500 less calories a day than his metabolism/daily work require. So if Mo's metabolism/work requirement is 3000 calories a day, he needs to eat 2500 calories a day for a week to lose 1pnd of fat. Now, mutiply that out and you have 70 weeks. If he wants to lose 1.25pnds a week, it's around 50 weeks. TONS OF WEEKS. It's easier to pack on weight than it is to remove it. I don't think you understand how much 70pnds of fat is.
that's b.s. he can't stay in shape b/c of his acl grant hill's been injured for years now and hasn't put on 70 lbs these athletes have every resource imaginable to do pool rehab and the like but he's prob at Cato's house "playing video games all day"
Okay, I was thinking about this and decided to do a little research. It didn't say Taylor gained 70 pounds, it said Taylor was 70 lbs overweight. I checked the ideal weight for a 6'9 person and it came out to 210 pounds. But with someone with a large frame like Taylor, 230 is probably "ideal." So, he was at least 30 pounds overweight last season. You don't weigh 260 and not be overweight. Hell, Shaq is technically 50 pounds overweight. I'm sure 90% of the power forwards in the league are overweight. Eddie Griffin is about the ideal weight for a person of his height, and everyone agrees that he is too weak. I just think a lot of us are thinking he gained 70 pounds in 7 months, and that is not the case. Its probably more like 35 pounds. That's still bad, but I think we are exagerrating it a little bit. And just for the record, I went from 198 to 160 over the summer after my junior year.
no one should be defending mo he's an athlete... it's his job... he gets paid to do what he does. 70lbs isn't even like a baby... it's like babyface in his tummy the guy doesn't have the metabolism to keep his weight down and it is apparent in his features. losing even 40lbs. in a month or two is not healthy... it has affects on your heart and body... it is difficult to adjust to. mo has no justification for this i don't care if he can finally beat cato at starcraft and quake... he should have been careful because he's an athlete and the trainer needs to be there watching his ass... because it's obvious mo is too fat to look behind him and see it. next time you puff one up mo, make sure you don't move your head too much because you might affect some tidal waves over here
Just thought I'd throw this in here. I had to go on a "no carb" diet for a time, to control my insane lipid #'s, because the meds weren't working. I lost 20 lbs. that I didn't think I had to lose in 6 weeks. I went from looking normal to looking too thin (I'm not a big guy). It was a weird experience (and I LOVE potatoes and pasta!), but it must work for some people. I don't think it's healthy, and I was religious about doing it, but massive amounts of vitamins etc. helped. BTW, it worked. Cho. from 650 to 190, Tri. from 1200 to 195. Perhaps Jones can get him on something like that, but I don't have a lot of faith in Jones or MoFat at the moment.
You aren't taking excercise into consideration. Obviously he's going to have to start eating a lot better, but excercise by far is the most important thing if you're trying to lose weight fast. Two hour of nonstop basketball could easily burn 1000 calories. My guess is that Taylor weighs around 295 right now. He needs to at least get down to 270. He could easily lose 30 pounds in the offseason IF he works hard and exercises. That's a big IF!
OK, first of all, he didn't tear his ACL, he tore his achilles. Big difference. I tore my ACL a few years ago and had to go through rehab. It wasn't very long at all before I was able to do limited cardio. I put on a little bit of weight while going through rehab, but nowhere near the proportional equivalent (on my 5'10" frame) of 70 pounds. And that was doing "weekend warrior" rehab -- going to PT when my job allowed it which was usually only 3-4 days a week and for sessions that usually lasted an hour or so. A professional athlete, whose only job is to rehab the injury, should be able to get to PT much more often and for much longer sessions than I could. Having said that, Mo had a different injury. It's quite possible that a torn achilles prohibits much cardio due to an inability to bear much weight. Anyone know much about rehabbing a torn achilles? I'm curious to know more before I conclude that Mo is a lazy fat-ass bust. But I'm certainly leaning in that direction ...
I'm sure the weight chart you are looking at has guidelines for various heights etc, but I have some friends who are in excellent physical shape and they are 6'2 or 6'3 and weight about 210-220....Mo's playing weight has always been 270 or so...therefore, if he is 70 lbs overweight...then he is probably 70 lbs over his playing weight. At worst, if they are exaggerating, he is 50 lbs over his playing weight which still makes him a disaster.
In that case he would be 320 pounds. Do you really believe he weighs more than Shaq? I don't believe that for one second.
Now why did you have to go and put it like that? I also don't know if I believe this story entirely. The season just ended not that long ago and Mo did not look 70 lbs heavier than at the beginning of the season. I'd believe 30-40 which would put him close to 3 bills, but not 330.
I'll go out on a limb here with AntiSonic and give Mo the benifit of the doubt. I think he will be in playing shape when the season comes around. I don't think he is as bad as it sounds like DCKid is saying. Why doesn't someone start a bet over this???
Ouch. But if your woman keeps wanting it the way she does, then I don't see how I won't lose that in the next 7 months.
i just read clutch's report... Taylor is listed as 6'9" 260lbs on nba.com...so is he really 330lbs or close to 300llbs. Either way that's ALOT of weight for anybody to try and drop off.
How reliable is the number 70? Is there a chance that this "source close to the team" got it wrong a bit, it was exaggerated as it made it through the grapevine, etc? Or can this be assumed to be first hand knowledge? I only saw a few games, but I did see two in March and was able to see Mo on the bench. I would think that such a dramatic weight gain would be immediately noticeable - not just that he looked a little bigger. Additionally, since he was still around teamates, coaches, and trainers during the year would they have really waited until the end of the year - when he has gained 70 pounds - to become concerned? If so, then they are all morons who need to be fired. Even though he was injuredand his mobility mitigated, he would have been monitored. Remember around Feb when he was talking about being more active and wanted to come back early? The staff was evaluating him then and did not want to risk anything, despite his progress and desire. Does that sound as if he was sitting around gaining weight? If he was fine then, and getting himself into shape, then that would mean that he gained 70 pounds since lat Feb when he realized he would not come back? Don't really buy that.
Here's my theory: it was Rudy's plan all along to sit Mo Taylor out this last season. The ACL injury was a hoax. He's been working out with UT Football strength and conditioning coach to bulk up. He's added 70 lbs. of pure muscle, and can push around anybody in the paint. We are now the only team capable of stopping Shaq. Rudy is a genius.
Exercise itself means very little when it comes to burning fat. Sure it burns fat but the importance of cardio is that is raises your metabolism and burns more fat when you aren't exercising. 2 hours of non-stop basketball will not burn 1000 calories. I run for an hour on an eliptical trainer and it only burns 250 or so calories. But the benefit comes while I'm not exercising or sleeping, etc. Sure he could lose 30pnds but he'll still be a fatty. And looking at him I can tell he has a good metabolism for putting on muscle and fat(aka a SLOW one). Problem is, if you want Mo to lose weight quick he's gonna lose muscle too and be less effective on the court. Of course this would not have been a problem had he eaten healthy, taken some readily available supplements, did an hour of swimming 4 times a week and hit the weights w/ a trainer. But he didn't so now he's carrying a small boy in his stomach.
I knew when I heard Mo talking about being friends with Tractor Traylor we were in trouble. I guess it'll be okay once he gives birth to those triplets.
