I'm not familiar with beaches in texas aside from Galveston and was just wondering if there is any place nicer we can go for the weekend.
Just took my 5 and 3 year olds to Corpus Christi for the weekend. They had a great time. The drive was more reasonable than South Padre (3.5 hours vs. 6). The sand along North Beach and Aransas Pass is better than the main beach in town. What's really nice is that it's a pretty long and shallow drop into the ocean, so the kids can go out a reasonable distance and still stand. There is some seaweed and you have to be careful for jellyfish. They also have a nice aquarium with a neat dolphin show. Overall, good option for the family as it is better than Galveston and not as far as South Padre.
Surfside is nice but essentially looks like Galveston, maybe a tad better. South Padre is the ticket but too far. Corpus is probably the best compromise. Destin is better than all of them but a long trip.
I'm at Port Aransas right now with the family. It's on Mustang Island just off Corpus Christi. I prefer this place over South Padre.
How are the beaches in the USA? I'm from Australia and thoroughly enjoy the sand and surf. I hear California (where Kelly Slater is from?) And Florida (south beach hehe) are awesome but what's the quality like overall?
Years back I went to some natural springs waterfall/lake in Austin. It was nice, but i think it might get pretty crowded. ' Gotta head south along the coast, Galveston sucks. I would not consider any beach it Texas 'good'. If you have the time/money, Id say take a day or two trip to Florida (I've been to Destin a few times). Can make it in a day, the extra time driving is worth it.
It depends on what you like. Mid to northern CA is too cold to swim. Southern Ca has a good surf in some spots. Water is ok and sand is brown. Atlantic side surf is boogie board rough with undertow. South beach sand is very course but thats usually not what people go for. Keys have very pretty water and the best fishing but beaches are actually pretty scarce. Gulf side...if you look at a satellite image you will see that the mississippi river is like america's sewer pipe. The currents push it toward TX. The further away you can get from the mouth, the better. While on the east side of the river is nice from Gulf Shores,AL to Panama City Beach,FL. The water is clear and the sand is white though ther isn't much of surf unless there is a storm. From PCB to St Pete, FL is good for fishing but not many/any beaches. From St. Pete to Naples has a variety of beaches. Some white and cool to walk on as they are made of quartz. Some have a dark grey sand just a few miles away and you can do some fosselized shark tooth hunting if you want to take the time. Some have tons of shells, literally, you have to walk over to get from the sand to the water. I'm sure like Australia, it varies to your tastes. Unlike Australia though is it is not as dangerous.
