So what is your point? What was wrong with that statement? Again I did not assert that it was an impossibility. The agent stated they wanted more money. That much was clear and it was also clear we needed a miracle to happen because our hands were virtually tied. I assume you more intelligent than that. I am just as excited as most, and I know it is a miracle - a very slim chance turned true. Again what exactly did I say that was not prudent or wrong?
Bit of consternation on the Dallas radio talk shows about this move. Some folks are upset with the Mavericks for not making a move for Swift. On Norm Hitzges' talk show, he refers to this move as a great one for the Rockets because (in his words) "Swift brings athleticism to a team that desperately needed to get more athletic".
I just found out. But I am relieved that it only cost us the MLE. I am so excited about this coming season and we could still pull off a major trade.
hahaha, dallas people are so spoiled... they are mad they didnt make a move for swift? why the hell would they want swift? they have dirk and mr. overpaid dampier starting. swift wants to go somewhere he will be able to start and have an impact. the dallas fans are just use to their organization signing anyone they can. rox>mavs... if we can get dermarr johnson somehow and have glover on the roster as well... this team is set for a championship
IT's good to be Rockets fan, IT has been exciting every summer for a few years. We got stars our fans want. CD has been trying to excited fans, i bet he comes this site very often.
Exactly, I dare teams to go small on the Rockets now!!! C - Swift PF -McGrady SF -Barry SG -Head PG -James But what really excites me about this team is Swift at Center in a small lineup!!!
i was shocked to hear so soon that swift was coming cause i thought he would sign for more money. good job by cd for signing him for mle (no sign and trade). now we have more trade bait to offer to strengthen our back court. damon stoudemire has had interrest in the rockets but we sure cant pay him enough. if he wants to take a paycutt and join a contender then im all smiles . hopefully we can lure a better point then damon...
I don't think you understand RikQuik's point. He didn't mean that West will deal Swift to another team in a sign and trade. He means that Stromile cares enough about money (he even said so himself) that the Grizzlies will have leverage to do a sign and trade with the Rockets if West wants to. And I think that makes plenty of sense. We might be getting a little ahead of ourselves in assuming that Swift signed for the MLE. There has been no official comment from the Rockets and Swift's agent didn't disclose any terms of the deal. So the question is do we have any players in the final year of their contract who are making in the $6-$7 million range? Or do we have any valuable pieces (Mike James, Bob Sura) in the $6-$7 million range that the Grizzlies might want? But even if it turns out this way, Swift in the $6-$7 million range is a deal that I'd be willing to do.
Well, how exactly do the TEs fit in with this? We supposedly have two TEs, together worth about 2.5 million.. so what does that mean exactly? We could trade any one of our guys currently under contract to Portland for DS, and we could take back as much as 2.5 million MORE than we sent? Is that correct? If I am wrong, please forgive me, as I am in no way a cap expert.. but if it's true, then how much exactly does DS think he's worth at his age, and with his acknowledged baggage? What if we traded, say, Spoon or Baker.. whatever they are making PLUS 2.5 million, that might be enough for DS.. since we are already on the hook for however much Spoon's or Baker's contract is worth anyway, wouldn't the question then simply become, 'Is DS worth an extra 2.5 million added to the payroll?' Even if it means some LT hit? Couldn't we then just cut one of the other players, such as Mooch or Ward, and get the LT relief that way? I realize I am likely way off, but again, if Houston is so attractive, and DS is as excited about re-uniting with TMac as he is letting on, then it might not be as hard to get a deal done as it may seem..
I don't see how Stromile could have come out, through his agent, and say 'I have decided on Houston.' and his agent say 'Stro WILL be a Houston Rocket next season.' if there were still any possibility at all that Memphis is still involved in the process. West himself has already been quoted in the Memphis paper that he is happy for Sto, he thinks this is a good spot for him, and that he hopes Stro will be able to become what he never quite was in Memphis.. That does not sound to me like a guy who is still trying to cut any kind of deal. Sounds to me like Stro is long gone from the Griz. Having said all that, though, perhaps it wouldn't even necessarily be a bad thing, if we DID work a S&T for Stro, and pay him a little bit more.. then that would still leave us the MLE for Damon.. hmmm... unless of course we would get a better deal in a S&T with Potland....
Word from New Jersey was that Portland was asking for more in a S&T for SAR than Memphis was for Swift. But the Nets really wanted SAR and SAR really wanted the Nets, so the parties were willing to cut a deal. ESPN is reporting the following: "If the Nets are unable to get the Blazers to agree to a sign-and-trade, Abdur-Rahim has agreed to sign with the Nets for their mid-level exception at five years for about $28 million, according to the team source. So, either way, it looks like the Nets will get their hands on Abdur-Rahim." http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2110920 The way I see it is that the Swift situation is no different. Swift has committed to coming to the Rockets regardless. But if they can work out a S&T with Memphis, Swift will be all for that (mo' money, mo' money, mo' money). And because Memphis was purportedly a more willing trade partner than Portland, maybe something will get done over the next few days. That being said, I agree with you that it'd be cool if we could get Swift through a reasonable S&T and then pick up Stoudamire with the MLE.
Wow, I really missed this last night. When I heard about it this morning on my shower radio, I almost slipped on my soap! This really swells me with Rocket Red Pride. Sure, CD has screwed up a few times, but this is a SLAM DUNK, and we are sitting better than we have since '97! How about a SS celebration party somewhere? J
I am really excited about the addition of Stromile because he will make this team better. He will bring what we expected Eddie Griffin to have brought when he messed himself and his career up, which cost him his stay with us. We now have his replacement! By the way, which players will then remain on the roster at the beginning of the season? Because right now, we have too many players and I would really like for us to add both Glover and Baxter to the mix. Are we then going to waive several players? If so, whom are we going to waive? Here are my picks to be waived to make room: Spoon, Moochie, Ward. Then trade David Wesley, but keep Baker, Bowen, Padgett, and Barry. What do you think about this?
I agree, Baxter and Glover would be great to have. (shoot me now but,) I really wouldn't mind seeing badiane either be on the (3rd string) bench, or the reserve on the team. CBA says we can have 15 man roster right? that'd be enough. But as for waiving? I don't think thats a good idea. All those expiring contracts are money we can clear cap space. Definetly someting inticing to teams far worse in cap situations than we are. They are trade worthy, so I don't think waiving is a good plan.
LMAO, from mavtalk.com http://www.mavtalk.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=001219 Stro-No Jonathan Wall - 19th July, 2005 2:52 AM Could someone please tell Mark Cuban that he has a team to take care of? After finishing the season on a sour note and heading into the off- season with holes-a-plenty, Cuban just made one of the biggest blunders of the off-season by not picking up former Memphis Grizzlies star Stromile Swift. Sure Cuban doesn't have the cash right now, but coming from the "George Steinbrenner" of basketball, Cuban should've gone out of his way to nab the one piece of the puzzle he has been searching 4 years for. Swift, who's known to Mavericks fan as the, "guy who almost ripped Dirk's head off with a tomahawk dunk," decided to bolster an already great Houston frontline by signing a deal with Dallas' most hated rival Monday afternoon for the MLE. The signing of Swift not only proved the Rockets worth as a future contender, it also proved just how far the Mavericks have fallen this off-season. Team all over the league have been jockeying for position in the already crowded Western Conference, and yet, the Mavericks remain a casual viewer, while still trying to figure out what to do with Michael Finley's albatross contract. This past season, Maverick's fans begged and pleaded for the team to go out this off-season in hopes of nabbing an athletic forward; not only did the team miss the boat over the past couple of weeks by laying down on the job, but the team also just let their possible weapon to Amare Stoudemire slip away. You have to wonder what Mark Cuban is thinking over the past couple of weeks as he continues to prove that he can multi-task with the best of them. Too bad for Cuban that he didn't put his money where his mouth is. Any Maverick's fan can tell you that it's been the same song and dance each season as the team continually contends all season but never has the moxy to make it over the hump. If Cuban ever wants the chance to hoist the NBA trophy in the next 3 or 4 seasons, he will need to critically evaluate his current dealings. Last season Cuban tried to woo Jermaine O'Neal of the Indiana Pacers and Seattle Supersonics forward Rashard Lewis to Dallas in hopes of landing a forward to compliment All-Star forward Dirk Nowizki. While Cuban didn't land either star, he did show that he was serious about changing the face of the team. Since that off- season, Cuban has gone out and signed a stiff center, and a bunch of position players than have either gotten in off-court trouble, or left Maverick's fans scratching their heads. Picture a Dallas Mavericks team running the court with a shot blocking, dunk defying forward like Swift leading the break for a ferocious dunk - it's a beautiful picture isn't it? Too bad the only thing Mavericks' fans are ever going to see is Swift dunking on Mavericks' players in the worst jersey possible. Congratulations Houston, because you're the new winner in the Stromile Swift sweepstakes. If you're a Maverick's fan, those words are enough to make you sick.
those idiots at lakersground.net are certified haters. first they were mad when we got swift for the MLE, to saying kwame is a better player than swift.
