Anyone else love sushi? I just flat out adore it.

Today, I had two orders of Spicy Tuna rolls, some Spicy Salmon rolls and an order of tempura shrimp rolls.

    MAN....is it ever good.

Surprisingly here in Austin there is some quality Sushi, not as good as San Francisco, but still.....

Onto Dim Sum.........I can not find a quality Dim Sum place here in Austin, one where they bring the bamboo trays by and you get some good quality Dim Sum.

I used to live in Manchester England and miss the Dim Sum we got there.

Anyone else like Sushi and Dim sum?

    DD

goodluck finding a good dimsum place in austin. I only went to places like marco polo, t&s and man those places blow compared to what you could get in just houston.

but yeah, marco polo gets my vote for "decent" dim sum.

best place for sushi is musashino's off mopac before 183 (if you're coming from campus) mmmm that place is great. that, and kyotos happy hour located right above elephant room is not bad.

Have you tried Kyotu on Congress? Man that stuff is good! I had sushi there for the first time last summer and loved it. Their Longhorn, Spider, and Austin are great. Need to head back there sometime this Fall.

You "adore" sushi? Having a hard time picturing that. Maybe I'd "adore" a cute little deer and then be like "mmmmm... venison..." but SUSHI? Come on now! What's adorable about sushi?

Seriously though, sushi is my favorite food. Shame it's so damn expensive. And since I moved from Sacramento, it's just impossible to find a place in Wisconsin that's even half as good as my regular haunt back in Sac.

Rizzy you are the shizzy! I went there yesterday.

It's a couple blocks away from my acting classes and from 6-6:45 every weekday they have a very good happy hour. Although I have to say I'm shocked that you forgot to mention the Godzilla with the tempura flakes. When I make sushi at home I substitute rice crispies, which is bizarre but effective.

The prices during happy hour are excellent but it sucks that you're not allowed to get a to go box. It's 3.95ish for all rolls and the same for a "pitcher" of warm saki.

Any Clutchfans want to plan a happy hour sometime? I was just lamenting to my gf that I don't have any local Rockets fan friends.

hate to burst ur bubble, but the sauce on the longhorn roll is mayo + sriracha

but it's still damn good. ya'll should check out elephant room after kyoto's happy hour. good beer and great jazz music.

I love dim sum... nothing like some good ol chicken feet. Come to Houston and you'll find good dim sum places at Fung's Kitchen and Ocean Palace.

Good sushi places exist all over Houston too..

For dim sum in Austin: GOLDEN WOK.
It's a little north on I-35, they have a website somewhere but they have a daily lunch dim sum menu. On weekends (or certain days and time) they have the carts come around. During those "cart" days, the menu expands and I was surprised that they had about 20 different kinds of dim sum. The prices are about right, me and my gf get full on about 6-8 little bamboo steamer boxes which comes out to about $18. It's better than any dim sum I've had in Houston, and I've been to most of the places on Bellaire.

As for sushi, I think Kyoto's is highly overrated. The only reason you see a lot of people there is because it's cheap during happy hours. But you get what you pay for, the happy hour stuff looks/taste cheap and its premade (or that's the impression I get) since they have to fulfill all those happy hour customers, I guess that's the only way they can do it. I'd still go order from their lunch special since they make it to order. I wish they had a Todai here :( I'd love to put down $14 for an unlimited sushi lunch buffet.

I feel kind of McDonalds saying this but dude thanks! I love the longhorn. I think I ate two of them at the expense of real actual fish yesterday. Knowing what I know now, I'll be more about the Spicy Tuna and Godzilla from now on.

How did you find that out btw?

I'm not a fan of Dim Sum myself, but the only place you can a decent tray ini Austin is up North at the new Chinatown shopping center off Lamar and Braker. As far as sushi goes, in my 10 years in Austin I've tried just about every joint in town. My favorites:

Uchi: South Lamar; excellent sushi, rivals anything you get in NY or SF
Musashino: Mopac and Greystone (under Chinatown restaurant)
Maiko: 6th and Lavaca, good prices, great location, above average sushi, and good happy hour

Some of the others I've tried:
Sushi Sake: 183 @ Braker (Gateway Center)
    Mikado: 183 @ Burnet
    Kyoto: 2nd and Congress

Yeah UCHI is great, the head chef competed on Iron Chef America a few months ago. But the sushi roll part of the menu is average and highly overpriced. Plan on spending about $50/person because each entre is like an army ration. You know the portions they give out on Iron Chef to the judges? Yeah, you pay $18 for a dish and it's gone in 5 bites. :( So you end up ordering like 10 of those to impress your lady. :( :( Best tasting food otherwise. Would recommend to people with lots of monies.

LOL if all you want to get are spicy salmon / tuna roll, then that's pretty much the same amount of deliciousness anywhere that's not shady (i.e. near my apt. there's a sushi place CONNECTED to a dunkin' donuts).

Dim Sum rocks, but it's very high calories unfortunately.

I love both, east sushi on a regular basis but I've only had dim sum in China. Can someone point out a couple of good places in Houston? Preferably southwest or even Fort Bend. Or near the airport.
