If Bob Sura couldnt bring the ball up court without fumbling he wouldnt be in the NBA. I watched every game the Rox played last year (with the exception of three) and I didnt see the problems you supposedly see. To me it sounds like your searching for excuses to get a "big name" player. Stoudamire might bring shooting but its at piss poor percentages. You can say he will improve, but you know what assuming does, right? Besides his in-efficient scoring there is absolutly nothing to like about the guy. He is a defensive liability that will get uncovered in the playoffs and creates for himself, not others.. He is a shoot first, pass second PG, and with T-mac and Yao on the team I would much rather have the vice versa. How is he going to win us more games than Sura shooting 39%? He might score more than Sura, but Bobby is more efficent. Give Bobby 14 attempts per game and he averages what Damon does. I keep hearing that he is a veteran that wants to win, what, Bobby Sura wants to lose??
Bob Sura did have a non-existant playoff series but we heard afterward his knee was pretty bad. I have no problem starting the season with Sura or James being our starter at PG. I'm not in a rush to unload players or expiring contracts. After 20-30-40 games a team will be underperforming and looking for a start fresh and a player will become available that is not available now. Remember last year Vince Carter & Baron Davis were had for just expiring contracts & picks. Maybe Elton Brad will become available if Gooden is swapped to Clipper land.
He doesn't want to lose, he's just an inferior player. Bobby can't dribble my man. Why did T-Mac bring up the ball when Yao wasn't in the game? Because Bobby will only bring the ball up to dump it to Yao in the post. He can't create anything off the dribble. Answer this question: How many times has Bobby taken a player one on one and used his skills (whatever they are) to get by and score. Stoudamire is devilish with the ball
Its funny that alot of people want Damon for his scoring when does it so inefficiently. There is better ways to find scoring than settling for somebody with a 39% fg%.. If we are patient, we can find somebody before the deadline in plenty of time for the playoffs. There's no need to rush and get a player that wont help, while were getting rid of players that do help.
To answer your question, not very many times. Which I prefer. I love the idea of bringing the ball up the court and dumping it in to Yao. Getting that instant double team to really open things up. Isolation basketball is not championship basketball. The last thing I want is Stoudamire doing Iso's every time.. Bobby may not have crossover's like Wade and Iverson, but I could care less. Crossover's arent needed if you play the right way. Isolation is easily the worst play in the world.
Kobe shot 40% last year. So did Allen Iverson. Ray Allen who's been called the best shooter in the NBA the past few years shot 42% and is a 43% career shooter. Scoring is tough in this league when you have to set up your teammates, play defense and create your own offense. Stoudamire is one the top 5 shooters in the league at the point guard position. People are so enamored with stats. There are shots and then there are shots. The shots that Stoudamire gets are not the same shots that Jon Barry gets. He's Mighty Mouse and contrary to popular belief he's a really good shooter.
We're not talking crossover my man. We're talking creating your own shot when people double Yao in the post and Yao gives you the ball back. What are you going to do? You need somebody who can break down their man. When we needed to score, Sura was not in the game. Mike James was.
I just want to say 'welcome to the board,' ktvoss. Glad to have you here. I'm with those who would rather see us move Sura to the bench. I'm not sure Stoudamire is the best fit at PG, but I'd like us to get someone to move Bobby to backup PG or SG. I do like James and Barry off the bench, but I can live with losing one of any of James, Sura, or Barry for an upgrade.
If DS was just a 5'10" SG he wouldn't have lasted this long in the NBA. Nobody is saying he is the ideal PG, but he has more PG skills than you realize. He is also a crafty player. Question: What did you think of Sura before he was a Rocket? I had heard of his toughness, but didn't know he was such a good chemistry guy and had no idea he was THAT tough. We all learned a lot about him last year. For you and some others, the same thing will happen with DS. Trust me.
Dont compare him to Kobe, AI, and Ray Allen. He is not nowhere near them. If your trying to imply that he gets guarded the same, your crazy. Stoudamire never sees a double team. Those guys are shooting a higher % while being doubled. Bottomline is, he is an inefficient scorer but since he scores more, he's better. I am sorry you think that...
I kindof knew what we were getting when we signed Sura. He doesn't have an ego and I knew he would defer to T-Mac and Yao. I didnt know he would bring all of the intangibles. You aren't going to convince me that DS will have an impact on the Rox like Sura did. I have seen DS play plenty of times to know what kind of player he is.
We don't have a scapegoat. If I have to blame anything that we lost to the Mavericks, I blamed the fcking refs. They really screwed the Rockets in the serie. We are just plain out of luck with these refs, so we can't really blame anyone, not any one of the Rockets, because last season all of them did a pretty good job except Vin Baker or Moochie. Sura has his limitations, he's often injured, he already gave us more than I could ask for, so I'm pretty happy to have Sura on my team. So was Wesley, we could not match up to Dallas' guards, and that is to say our backcourt is not up to par, but you're what you're. We just need to improve our backcourt now, I appreciate the effort Sura and Wesley gave to the team, but if there is a chance to improve, to upgrade, I am all for it.
One thing DS do better than Sura is hitting a perimeter shot. We need that fire power especially when guys are getting left wide open and being dared to shoot from outside.
I am all for upgrading. I like the idea... Damon Stoudamire is not an upgrade. He might score more points but he does it at terrible effeciency. He is not what I would call a defensive player. If Sura is not a championship PG, Stoudamire sure as hell isn't.. If we are going to call it upgrading, lets actually get a better product. If Damon Stoudamire was this great PG ya'll are painting him to be, he would have other suitors at his doorstep. Cleveland thought about him for about a day. They realized that a 5'10" shooting guard with no defense isnt going to help.. The fact is, I never heard his name mentioned before Tracy McGrady said it. Now that he said it, everybody is hopping on the bandwagon, because somehow "Mighty Mouse" is going to be our savior..
If we're looking for a three point shooter, we should look elsewhere. Just because he is better than Sura at launching a three, doesn't mean he will make this team better. Other factors have to be put in the equation, like defense and so on..
