sura is a good role player, but compare to SF3, he is nothing, he can get some good stat, that is because he is never a main target to opposite team like SF3 or TMAC or Yao.
*lol* Just when I thought I'd seen it all in the GARM. "Sura > Francis??" Wow... Oh, well, brooksstephens is entitled to his opinion. I respectfully disagree.
"Even up" you got a point. But given the difference in their salaries I'd hope CD was all over it to find out who the other $8m was going to be.
i pretty much agree with Clutch's post. sura has been great for us (as well as mutombo filling the cato role of rebounding and blocking) and i love how he chases down rebounds the way lue and ward never did, how he pushes the ball, plays hard, and can even have a good scoring night every once in a while. but comparing him to steve is just stupid. i also agree if i had steve, tmac, and yao, i'd use steve's considerable trade value to get what i really need, a point who can hit a 3 and a pf who can rebound and hit a 15 footer. steve wouldn't fit b/c he and tmac are fairly redundant except tmac does everything (except take it to the basket) better so steve isn't needed. as far as whether sura is what we need. i'd say no even though i like him. he doesn't hit the outside shot very well (32% on 3's this year and career i believe) which is a reason we struggle from the outside in so many games and he doesn't break a D down really (thought that's optional if you're a kenny smith/derek fisher type pg). as far as sura's efficiency, it's hard to say a 32% 3 pt shooter who averages 2.5 TO with only 3.6 FGM/g and 4.7 apg is efficient. by the numbers and the size of their roles in their respective offenses, steve is actually less turnover prone than sura. in reality, sura's game is a lot like francis'. sura is just a poor man's francis. well, more like a broke guy on the corner begging for change man's francis, but still they have similar games.
Francis is definitely the better player, so this thread is a bit ridiculous. However, if we're talking about value per $. Sura hands down. The guy is a great deal at the $3? million we pay him.
Neither Sura or Francis is a pure PG; but Francis is clearly the most athletic. Francis seemed to have a hard time guarding Sura the other night, but that's true for most PG's he faces. I am not a Francis fan, but Sura is a role player and Francis is not. I really like Sura, but, overall, he is not the threat that Francis is.
This is not a fair question for Stevie. He was the main man and is a better player than Sura. HOWEVER, Sura is a better match for this team than Stevie, especially now we have TMac. I loved the way Stevie played when he was on. But his TO numbers are simple too unreal for a true PG. Sura might not be much better but at least he's not forgetting who he is playing with. Stevie on the other hand, wouldn't pass to himself if he had an open shot. Sometimes, fancy dribbles can only go so far before it becomes wasted effort and a desperate long shot.
Actually, he did just a few days ago (a bounce pass lay-up). Should've been called for a travel, though.
I am sad somebody even think about this. Steve is a way better player than Sura. There are two reasons. One, Steve does what he does throughout his short career. Sura does what he is doing once in a long time. Reason two, Steve does what he does when he is the focus of the defense. Sura does what he is doing when the defense was on Yao and Tmac. So, stop it. Be sane!
A little? A little??? There IS no comparison. You saw what Sura could do as the top option in Atlanta late last year, after being buried on the bench to start the year elsewhere: he put up pretty numbers and the Hawks didn't win much of anything. Francis makes question decisions from time to time and occasionally gets caught up in one-on-one games, but he more than makes up for those with his heart, drive, and determination. Oh yeah, and throw in his ability to pop 30 on any given night, dish out 10 assists in the process, and rebound better than any point guard in the league...among other things...while as the leading option on his team, whether in Houston or Orlando...and there is no comparison. Sura can put up some points and rate stats with TMac and Yao around him, but that makes him a 3rd option role player and not a superstar. He's a gritty player, yes, but that again does not make him better than Francis. I like Sura -- heck, he's a fellow FSU grad -- but he's not better than Francis. Put the question this way: who would the Rockets rather have, everything being equal? Steve Francis. You can talk about how a player fits on a squad and yes, perhaps Sura fits better with McGrady. But alas, the initial argument was "Sura > Francis," which isn't the case. Oh, and there's the little matter of this over the course of the season... An Orlando squad with Steve Francis and Grant Hill running the show: 22-17 overall, 11-6 vs. the West, 5th in their conference (would be 7th out West) A Houston squad with, essentially, Sura and McGrady running the show: 22-19 overall, 13-10 vs. the West, 8th in their conference (would be 6th in the East) And this... Sura -- 10.2ppg, 5.7rpg, 4.7apg, 45% shooting (32% 3pt), 1.3spg, 2.5 TO/gm in 33 min/gm Francis -- 21.8ppg, 6.3rpg, 7apg, 43% shooting (31% 3pt), 1.4spg, 3.9 TO/gm in 38 min/gm Even adjusting Francis' PPG downward by 3ppg to account for the difference in TOs between him and Sura, there's still not a comparison.
