Imo, Chromebook is the way to go for students. The drive apps are more than sufficient for the work that most students do. My wife just graduated from Texas State using nothing but the chromebook for the last two years.

    Good luck.

If they already have a desktop PC then get a Chromebook.

Chromebook is great but keep in mind if the kid is going to college soon and wants to be an engineer/science major he probably will need applications that are not supported on chromebook such as matlab.

You can always boot a Linux OS on a Chromebook, can't you?

Long way from early high school to that level of college. Even if the kid was gonna be a senior, still a long way.

My little sister just went to college and we got her a chromebook and she loves it. She had a laptop throughout High school, and she pretty much just gave it to my other sister without much hesitation. If it's just for what you're asking, a chromebook is perfect. You can get Microsoft Office on there too so word processing isn't a problem. so cheap too compared to a laptop.

this is the one we got for her for sam's.

With that said, there's only one option --- Panasonic's Toughbook 31.
