My school district is offering a program for an online Masters degree for a total cost of a little under 5k to be completed in a year and a half. The annual stipend for completing this course would be at 5k, so I think it is an investment that would pay for itself in a year. Now, the question is, where do I go to apply for a student loan. Is Fafsa the way to go? Since it is an online degree, can I put in a nice laptop into the student loan?

How are these repaid? I've heard that part of student loans for teachers can be deferred for working in a title 1 school, which I do.

When do student loans start getting paid back.

I am very ignorant in this because I paid cash up front for my bachelors and never had a family to support while I was in school.

    Thanks for any help.

You should go into the financial aid office and search for some minor funds.

The university offering is Lamar in Beaumont. Not exactly my neck of the woods. I will look online and see what their uni offers in financial aid.

I agree with the first response, contact the school's financial aid office. They will give you some great advice.

You'll have to fill out a FAFSA. Almost all grad students qualify for 8,000 dollars worth of subsidized stafford loans (meaning the interest while you are in school is paid by the government). All students qualify for 12,500 dollars worth of unsubsidized stafford loans per year. Most can also get a grad plus loans at a higher interest rate for the remaining cost of education.

The way laptop loans work is that they add the expense of the laptop to the first year of your education to increase your cost of education.

So, the simple answer is, no matter what, even without decent credit you should get some federal loans. With decent credit you can also get grad plus and private loans as well.

Im an enrollment counsler at University of Phoenix, houston... i deal with students and these issues daily.

Filling out the fafsa will be neccesary except it is not based on your Credit Score, they base it on how many credits you have from school.

So if you already have your bachelor's degree you would be eligible to recieve 20,500 for a masters program. I know our masters program tuition is around 15,000.00 so however you found one for 5 grand is news to me!

If you have any questions let me know! and as long as the money is used for Educational purposes and you keep reciepts in case of Audit you should be fine!

    :D

Cool. The 5k program is from Lamar university in partnership with certain school districts...

Do you know anything about Title 1 school Loan forgiveness?

    Lamar is an accredited college.
The degree is a M. ed in Teacher Leadership. Any Masters degree pays me an annual 3k stipend. A Masters used in my field will pay 5k annual stipend. The degree is definitely worth something to me.

    Curriculum of:
    School community relations
    research for teachers
    teaching the diverse learner
    School Law
    Schools as learning communities
    Public school curriculum
    Student expectation/motivation
    cognition and instruction
    creative instructional strategies
    C&I modification for atypical learner
Using assesment data to guide instructional decisions
    Classroom management.

    its an Online degree correct?

I believe i heard someting about this in an email i recieved.. That you order a cd and thats how you obtain your master's degree..

That it is so cheap bc there are NO TEACHERS/PROFESSORS it is strictly you learning on your own!

I could be wrong, but sounds like something is up with that!

Im an education specialist when it comes to enrolling master's programs and $5k seems so cheap!

i would do some research if you havent already!
