My sister found a stray dog. It had a collar but no tags. It looks like it's around 7 years old, due to the discoloration of one of its eyes.

Anyways, from the look of the fur etc. on this dog it has been out in the wild for atleast a month. There are many huge knots in the hair. It is a mess.

I bathed it earlier, and have it right now. I'm going to put up fliers for the dog, but by the current state of it it appears to have been on it's own for a long time.

My question is, will places like Pets Mart cut its hair/groom it to remove the knots even though there isn't any tags? I'm going to tell them it's a stray, since it would look like I neglect the poor animal.

The dog looks like the dog from that play Annie.

Would I need to get it its rabies shot before the hair cut? It's the sweetest dog.

When I went with my dog, I needed to bring proof of shots. So I'd think they wouldn't cut the dog's hair.

Definitely get it's shots. And pray it hasn't been abused, or has character flaws.

Be careful whatever you do. I really doubt it's advisable to take the dog anywhere before the vet.

Have you checked the paper for lost dog announcements?

I found a lost fox terrier once that had been missing for about 3 weeks. Although it was not in the current papers... I called the classifieds of my local paper and asked them to look up a cross-reference of all missing dog listings. They found the dog's description and the area it was lost (near where I found it, within blocks) from an ad place at around 2 1/2 weeks before I found him.

The owner even slipped us benjamin as a little reward.

If the dog is sweet and good natured, it probably has an owner somewhere that has given up their search.

Let us know what happens... ;)

    Will do.

They came with the dog around midnight, so it's a little too late to do much regarding calls etc.

Kind of sucks we found her this weekend. Busy week for me, and I have to go to the doctor myself tomorow due to a recent scare.

Alright, looks like I'll be calling a vet first tomorow.

I forgot to mention the dog did have a an old beat up collar, but with nothing on it. Man, this poor 'ol dog is such a mess, physical wise right now. it's sleeping at my feet as I type this.

My sister thinks the dog maybe have been left behind by hurricane refugees... I don't know about that, but the pup has been out on it's own for a while.

The dog is kind of skiddish too, like it's not use to being around a person...

IRoc, that would be nice...part of the reason I think I may have brought him in so fast is that I recently lost my old dog of 15years. She finally passed away a few months ago.

Give it shots and a checkup as it most likely has worms.

I'm not sure what kind of dog it is. Last night...err this morning, I did some seachring through the classifieds. I didn't find anything that resembled this dog.

It looks like it's a ****zu and something mix. It has the face of my old Yorksire Terrior. It's probably like 15lbs. It's got really light tan furr, and is long hair.

I'm trying to figure out how much the shots etc. are going to cost and where's the best place to get them done.

    I'm in College STation.

    Thanks boo.

Call local vets and ask them if any clients have reported a lost dog

Did that, and nothing matched the dog. Calling petsmart now to get shots done.

I caught a stray a few years back and put it in the backyard. It seemed hungry so I fed it a couple of hot dogs.

After it dug under the fence for a few hours I found the owner and who instead of being grateful was upset that we had fed the dog meat...apparently the entire family including the poor dog where vegetarians.

    Yeah, thanks. :p

I'm a caring person. But damn, wish I didn't quite my job right now. I'm trying to find the cheapest places to get the shots and examination done. comparing prices is a b****.

Definetly got to find another job this weekend.

I know the PetSmart's around here will let you come in during the day and just get the shots for a reduced rate. You don't have to pay for the office visit, although you may want that.

So, are you going to keep the dog?

If the dog has no tags, then your chances of finding the owner are probably about the same as winning the lottery if the dog has been on its own for a month or so. I wouldn't spend too much time looking. It may have just been abandoned as so many pathetic people out there often do...drop it off somewhere and drive away. That is the worst type of person there is.

I agree Surf. People like that suck. My sister thinks it was left behind by hurricane evacuees or something, our city had a lot of them the last month.

I couldn't find any owner, so it looks like I'm going to be keeping this ol gal. The dog is very sweat, and affectionate. It follows me around and is very friendly to people. I just got it an appointment (for thursday though, I'm so busy this week) , so for the mean time this pup will be here staying with me.

Petsmart won't groom her till she has tags/shots etc. They do have dicount vacinations, but that's not till the 22nd of Oct, and that's way too far away.

This dog needs to be checked up and then groomed...badly.

The appointment is going to cost me roughly 60ish bucks. :( with all the vacinations and heart worm check etc.
