Did he do ANYTHING to keep his team in it, or did he just pad his stats in a blowout?

I'm not trolling, I'm just throwing some cold water on an unreasonably giddy crowd. And you wouldn't be so giddy if you didn't have some doubts in the bottom of your gut too...

I'll admit, and have admitted before that he has some skill. But what revelation did you see last night? There was nothing we didn't know already: that he could block shots merely because he's huge and that he has a jumper. Does it transfers to longterm, consistent success in the NBA? Does it transfer to seasonlong success? Can he repeat now that the players have seen him? Ha! No way of telling.

Lets wait till at least the half of the season before we create a bandwagon...if it's deserved, I'll get on it with you. :)

he could have freaked out under the pressure, hell i though he was gonna foul out with 5 points. we are giddy but not unreasonable. i think most people here just wanted a nice display without embarrassment and we got a hell of a lot more than that.

Don't you have anything better to do than try to spoil the party? I can't speak for everyone else but I've had my doubts, sure, and still do in some part, but I think last night went a long way towards silencing the "he's just another Shawn Bradley" crowd. I think it's pretty obvious that this guy is so much more and actually worthy of a number one pick. I think you're just upset that it's not your boy Jay Williams who wasn't all over the sports headlines this morning.

The same circumstances have you all giddy about Chandler and Curry...try to pretend that Ming is a Bull and you'll see why we are excited.
Ming had a great game, he shot a good percentage, he didn't get manhandled even though the US players tried pretty hard, he clearly intimidates in the paint and CAN block as the US all-stars found out.
What else do you want? how are we unreasonable? He's playing with a -less than CBA quality team- and still can churn out 13,11,6,and 3.And this is w/o real US coaching and training.
The team's overall quality was the reason for china's demise...NOT yao ming. Which is the same reason the US was so dominate... it wasn't because of Jay Williams...but because they had an all-star at every position.
Oh yea...what did YOU think of Williams? I thought it was a little strange that he got the ball stolen from him by one of the chinese guards at mid-court. Just careless, but everyone plays careless when they are up by 30.

Are you insane? Put Jordan on the Chinese National team and the score would have been about the same.

As the other poster pointed out, look at his production in context. He put up 13-11-6 with a bunch of crack babies on his team. Put Mobley and Francis in the backcourt, and his numbers will only get better.

I agree we shouldn't be getting overexcited, but there were many people (sports reporters, players, everyday fans) who thought Ming wouldn't even stand a chance against NBA competition, and this is without ever seeing him play. After the game, I've heard from basketball players, sports writers, and sports announcers that have said, "huh...ya know...he's a lot better than I thought." So, obviously there are a lot of people that have changed their opinion from "Ming being a complete bust" to "Ming being better than I thought."

I don't think some of the people knew a damn thing about Yao, now they at least know he has skills. And no, he didn't pad his stats at all. How can you pad your rebound and block stats anyway? Everything he did was in the flow of the game. In fact, if he wasn't playing with such bad teammates his stats would have been even better.

That game just gives us Pro-Ming guys a chance to stick it to the haters, because no matter which way you slice it, that game did not do to anything to help their prove their case that Ming won't be able to handle the NBA.

Unreasonably giddy crowd? Are you talking about us at the BBS or the <a href="http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=1053">players of the U.S. squad</a>?

How about the way that at just 21 and a rookie he handled himself in the paint against NBA players? While he has a ways to go, Antonio Davis, one of the stronger frontcourt players in the league, called him "very strong".

There is no way to know everything from <B>one game</B>, but is there reason for optimism? Hell yes. Any logical person that saw him play can realize that.

Oh yes sir. "<B>we</B> create a bandwagon". That was hysterical.

GB - he sold out the place. I would say that is enough right there. He has NO talent on his team. Put him in a Rockets uniform and his 13pts-11reb-6blk could easily improve, not that I would complain if he averaged those #'s his rookie year. Imagine the defense having to worry about a 7 footer and 2 of the deadliest guards in the NBA. We will have a dangerous inside/out game, remember what happen the last time we had that? :D

Look at the ESPN homepage or read the article.

Hey now, don't slam gettingbranded too much.

Yesterday was a nice display by Ming, he looks promising and everybody here has reason to be happy about that.

But there's no denying that the Ming-craze in here is a bit over the top right now - just look at the forum! Circa 295 of the last 300 threads have been about Ming. Ming, ming, ming, ming, ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ming ...
At some point, it gets tiring.
Right now, I'm almost minged out , too.
    ;)

I won't trade Yao Ming for Jay Williams and D Marshall. Curry and Chandler then I might consider it. Face it, the Bulls are not doing as well as the Rockets in this off season. After all, we stole the No.1 from you guys and others' hands. Hehe.

    Hmmm.
He's our first pick of the draft since 84'. He's the first foreign player ever picked first. He's 7'5". He has everyone, including NBA players, giving their 2 cents about how Yao is going to do in the league. He has great court awareness, a great shot, and a very good presence in the post. He creates a lot of controversy because of his asian decent and because of the country he is from which is pretty much a communist nation.

WHAT ELSE ARE WE GOING TO TALK ABOUT?
He is a lot more interesting to talk about than Steve's new shoe...

No need to start buying your Finals tickets yet...but I think there is real legitimate reason for optimism.

I see a lot of players who had no opinion of him suddenly gain one. I on the other hand always thought (as I've said) he had some skill. Whether he comes in and has the kind of rookie season Eddy did, or has a Tim Duncan rookie season (as the hype would have you think) remains to be seen.

Exactly. It's one game. Eddy and Tyke had several like it last season. But even now---it's still potential untapped.

    Ditto Ming.

Lets see, he's our #1 pick, considered a franchise center, is 7-5,300 pounds and can fly like a guard and bang with the big men, and almost had a triple-double against the United States. Yeah you're right, why talk about Ming?

    1. When Yao went out for the first time the Chinese team had 14 points and the score was still close. When Yao came back into the game the Chinese team still only had 14 points and the game was a blow out. BTW, the Chinese team scored points 15 and 16 almost immediately upon Yao's return. So yes Yao was able to keep it competitive while he was in the game.

    2. No Yao did not just pad his stats. He got 11 of his points in the 1st half when team USA was still trying to make a point. Yao barely touched the ball on the offensive end of the court during the second half.

Maybe you should have watched the game if you planned on making any comments to prevent yourself from sounding so ignorant.

Got a link for what? I'm just saying that when you brag about Jay Williams (summer league games or early in the season) think about the comments you just made to us.

<b>I see a lot of players who had no opinion of him suddenly gain one. I on the other hand always thought (as I've said) he had some skill. Whether he comes in and has the kind of rookie season Eddy did, or has a Tim Duncan rookie season (as the hype would have you think) remains to be seen.
    </b>

What hype? The majority of the media is calling him Shawn Bradley, and a good number of people on this message board aren't sold on him. It just sounds to me like you're ticked off that Rockets fans are happy about their pick. Really, what is there to gain for you to run onto a Rockets board and get upset because we're happy about our #1 pick? And we don't need him to have a Tim Duncan type season (even though that would be great), we have one of the best backcourts in the NBA, a 2nd year player with a ton of potential (Eddie Griffin), and some of our players coming back healthy (Rice and Mo), and a rookie with potential as well (Nachbar), so there isn't any pressure on Ming.

When did Eddy or Tyke put up 13 points, 11 rebounds, 6 blocks, 3 steals and 3 assists in one game? And when did Eddie or Tyke ever have to go against O'Neal, Wallace, Davis and LaFrentz all in the same game. Not once was Yao allowed to play any minutes against a scrub last night.
