All you libpigs have your collective heads in the sand once again. Here's some actual DATA for you, as opposed to your mindless babble about your outrage. Did you know that the US actually leads the world in stem cell funding? Oops.

    http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=00086741-2DB7-12BC-ADB783414B7F014C

    The US:
Federal government funding: About $550m for all stem cell research ($24m for hESC)
    Private funding: About $200m
    Public funding at state level:
    California: $3bn over 10 years
New Jersey: $11.5m (another $380m proposed)
    Wisconsin: $375m proposed
    Illinois: $1bn proposed
    Connecticut: $20m proposed

    The UK:
    Government funding: About $80m
    Private funding: $15m-$20m

    South Korea:
    Government funding: About $10m
    Private funding: About $50m

Did you even read the article you just googled for us? The first paragraph:

The US government, for example, provides an enormous sum ($550m) for stem cell investigations by global standards, but the portion for human embryonic stem cell (hESC) studies ($24m) is only slightly above the spending by countries with much smaller budgets where investments go farther.

Except that government figure you cite is money ALLOCATED for the original 22 lines in addition to adult stem cell research, none of which are used anymore. That's just budgeted money that's sitting there. Just like California's money has been budgeted but has yet to be handed out because they're still trying to come to a final ethical protocol.

Yes it really does make no sense.

Nice try texxx, but the 550 mil is for research that is not embryonic stem cell research and it is widely known that that is where the best chance of cure potential comes from.

Sam, when I said the US, I was referring to more than the US government. Please pay attention to details and do not make assumptions. I will have to channel your document review duties to other associates if you cannot prove to be competent.

The topic is not about private funding. Big swing and miss.

rodrick_98's first line of the thread...

"federally funded stem cell research. should it be allowed?"

I believe the whole point was about federal research funds. I'll go ahead and post what I put on the other thread about private v. federal resarch funding. There is a big difference.

I have a feeling this thread is one the bush apologists are just going to have to stay away from. Although they can at least say he will stand up to congress and veto!
Unfortunately, this was all probably a very calculated plan by Rove and the Republicans to get the party all aligned and rallied. Now that the moral base got their victory who knows whats next...

I'm not sure about the law but I think that in regard to using stem cells fetus there is another problem regarding how much they have differentiated. Even in adults there are stem cells but these have already differentiated to a degree. The embryonic stem cells though are undifferentiated.

The next "compromise" Democrats should give is to restrict research on discarded embryos from in-vitro fertilization.

This would force a wedge between the family values crowd and the embryo-lifers.

Since it already happens it won't be painful for the Democrats....
