Rap concert brawl overwhelms Galveston police

Galveston police and city officials were conferring today to review what went wrong when a weekend beach rap concert ended in multiple fights, leaving police "completely overwhelmed" to gain control.

"The chief and city manager are talking right now," Galveston police Lt. Jorge Trevino said.

At least two people were arrested Sunday afternoon in connection with the brawl, which broke out on East Beach — the only beach where alcoholic beverages are allowed — during an afternoon rap concert sponsored by Houston radio station Party 93.3. Police said at least 10 other people were arrested in Galveston on Sunday in connection with other incidents.

It took officers about four hours to get as many as 2,300 cars off the beach after the concert.

The problem began when police tried to arrest a group of men who were fighting. Other fights then broke out and the officers patrolling the concert were "completely overwhelmed," Trevino said.

Trevino earlier had said four officers were working security as an extra job at the concert. Today, he said there were at least eight, if not a dozen officers, working at the concert.

All on-duty officers and some whose shifts had not begun were eventually called to the scene, police Sgt. Byron Franklin said. Authorities shut down four city streets while trying to get as many as 2,300 cars off East Beach, he said.

Almost four hours passed before police cleared the streets.

Galveston Police Chief Kenneth Mack said he was out of state on Sunday and was trying to get up to speed on Sunday's events.

"It was an absolute fiasco," said Johnny Smecca, owner of Mario's Italian Restaurant.

Smecca said he saw people urinating in the alley behind his restaurant and dancing on top of cars.

The concert promoters could not be reached for comment today. The concert, according to the radio station's Web site, was the "Spring Break Party Beach Bash," featuring artists 2 Pistols, Colby O'Donnis, Lil Wil & Lil Keke, and Webbie.

Correct, do not stop for anything.

Also do not go on Kappa Weekend. That is the scariest crap ever. People nailing in the street, smoking weed. I've never seen so much candy paint and white cups in my whole life. It is the only time the whole year that the 24-hour Wal-Mart is closed in Galveston.

I made the mistake of going to my friends house in Jamaica Beach and didn't know it was that weekend.

Why is the Kappa Beach Party scary? I've been twice, nothing really scary about it.

Well its kinda out of control since everyone is basically drunk and driving around on the street and sidewalks.

I went twice and the driver of the car I was in pulled off onto the sidewalk through a few groups of people then parked to go take a wiz. No one really noticed or cared.

I live in Galveston on the East end. We heard a bunch of sirens last night and I guess this was it. I also went to the local grocery store and the Valero around 9 PM and there were a bunch of young drunks hanging around shouting and being loud. This explains it.

As far as the Beach party goes- it's almost dead over the past few years. Wal-Mart is open; I went shopping last year on Saturday of Beach Party weekend. It's just getting less and less popular. I'm sure city leadership is doing all it can to make it difficult to get permits on that weekend.

It was seriously like a bunch of animals out there. People were sleeping in the street, just walking across the street into traffic. It was mob rule. I did not see any cops around.

The next morning the entire main island was covered in trash. All over the street. This was 5-6 years ago. That year thw Wal-Mart was closed.

Kappa Beach party was just a disaster. I never went, but saw videos and got stories second hand. Just seemed like anarchy with people walking down the seawall, women barely dressed, weed being smoked all over, "women" giving shows for guys on the sidewalks, etc. Some idiot women decided to bring their kids to witness all this. Basically a Galveston version of Atlanta's Freaknic. It seems to have died down in the past few years, thank goodness. There really is no place for that kind of stuff in public. If it is done in the provacy of your own home or hotel room, have fun, but in public? No way.

The worst part about Spring Break is the violence AND the horrible shows on MTV. There are already bad shows on there but MTV Spring Break takes it to another level.
