He is probley not coming over now with Luther Head. Maybe he develops more and can help in a couple of years. Wonder if he will come over at least for summer league.
I don't see why Spanoulis won't come over. He can school Head and prove to CD he deserves a roster spot and bigger contract than Head got.
It seems that he's not serious going to the NBA. Hope that Badiane steps up big tym on the summer league in order to get Spanoulis' supposedly roster spot..
Does it actually say that he's not coming over? I seem to recall hearing that draft picks or potential draft picks will sign contracts even if they're planning on coming over. There's often an understanding that the players will break the contract if the opportunity to play in the NBA arises. I think problems only arise if the team builds into the contract a very high penalty for breaking (that was one of the problems with Tiago Splitter this year, I believe) Can anyone familiar with professional basketball overseas comment?
In a Chronicle article late last month (about 2 or 3 days before the draft), CD made a comment about both Malick and Spanoulis coming. Hopefully they do... it would be nice to see if the hype about Spanoulis really is legit. Of course we all know the hype about Malick is legit...
I believe this was already reported on. Spanoulis did so well this year that he was probably going to get a "big" contract (buy Euro standards) that would push up his salary requirement in the NBA. A minimum contract might not be enough now to sign him to the Rockets. But who knows. We should know alot more during/after summer camp in a couple of weeks.
if spanoulis signs rox will have 6 pg's two of them rookies. we all know jvg + tmac are hesistant to play/alongside rookies. there isn't going to be a lot of playing time. charlie ward wasn't shooting that badly before his knee went to mush last season.
You brought up a good point on Charlie Ward. He was actually shooting great last season before his knee gave out. Additionally, he tried so hard to come back after surgery; he tried so hard that he got a blood clot and was placed on blood thinners. THey had a Seton Hall article with Andre Barrett the other day, and he said that the best coach he's had in the NBA has been Charlie Ward. Anyways, back to Vassilous Spanillous. He said his dream is to play in the NBA as soon as possible. But he and his agent are playing the money game. If he signs with a Euro team, then that would force the Rockets to buy him out of his contract when he's ready; or else, we would have to renounce his rights and when he becomes very good, any NBA team will have to buy him out and give him a big contract. If I were the Rockets, I would go ahead and guarantee a roster spot now, even if he is not ready. Financially, it's a bargain, and it could turn out to be a great gamble if he's on the court within the next 2 years.
If they come 'how' do they get paid? Is a team required to dip into MLE or LLE, for example, to account for 2nd rounders' salaries above rookie minimums?
reaaaalllly? And just how do *we know* this for a fact? I know this is the conventional wisdom around here...but has anyone ever seen a actual article or quote from those two to that effect? If so, I missed it...and would appreciate it if you could back up your statement with a actual quote...not what you or any other genius around here thinks. btw...Ward is toast...he is done...Maloney him and get it over with
I don't think so, but I believe JVG himself said that we need to get younger.......But it's cool to ignore stuff like that so we can cry.
Can anyone tell me how this works? If we own Spanoullis rights and he can sign w/ any Euro team, is there a chance that a Euro player can stay in Euro forever w/o having any kind of committment to the NBA team?
It can happen, but usually the player wants to make NBA money and play on the big stage -- see Frederick Weiss (a Knick draft pick) for a player who wussed out (and probably couldn't play in the NBA anyways).
When you have a player that MIGHT be ready, but you can retain his rights and allow him time to mature in Eurpoe (while earning more than he would here while sitting on the bench), conventional wisdom says you let him do his thing and pick up his option next year.
Houston Chronicle Article No mention of him in this blurb, but definitely doesn't imply anything serious.
maybe he didn't get that contract with "guaranteed playing time" that he was reportedly being offered.
CD said Spanoulis would be here for the summer league camp on 610am last week. Something could have changed since then but I doubt it. CD said something like Spanoulis' improvement was 'incredible' or something like that. It almost makes me wonder if Spanoulis is trade-bait because of all the buzz (or hyperbole). I'm pretty sure he'll be here for the summer league, but have no clue whether he'll ever been on our roster. But any pg that's been compared to Nash has to get your attention. I want to see this guy on the floor with T-Mac and Yao.
