I was browsing through the Sunday Best Buy circular in the paper and I saw an ad for the Sony PSP, which is coming out soon.

Are any of you familiar with this portable gaming system? I tried looking onlne for info on this, but the info provided is minimal and not easily comprehended by someone oblivious to gaming systems like myself. It is retailing at $249. Do you think it is something worth buying?

There are a few threads in the BBS dedicated to the PSP.

If this is real it would be kick a$$!

I myself am going to wait a while before buying one of these. Their release in Japan showed that it had a number of flaws, which I am sure they fixed for the USA launch. But still, I am going to wait for the price to go down.

I would pay the $180 or so dollars just for the system, but I am not interested in paying $250 for the "value" pack or whatever they are calling it.

    Paging RC....

I don't know anything about the PSP. ;) ;)

I should be getting mine this week. I personally didn't have a problem spending the $250 on the device since it was rumored to be in the $400-$500 before, just for the device itself (it is actually going to cost ~$400 for me, but only because mine will come with some games). It isn't a bad idea to wait until they start offering the PSP just by itself though, like Uprising said, depending on how interested you are in the system. The $226 deal sounds good to me if you really want it.

Some guys, mostly those working on game review sites, have gotten their American PSP's, and it does appear as though some changes have been made. IIRC, the square button issue was fixed in time for the NA release, so each one should not have that problem. No one could do the disk shooting thing either, citing that the PSP feels a little more sturdier than their Japanese PSP's (yes, they actually have 2 of them before I can even get one  ).

If you really like games, I'd definitely heavily consider the PSP. IGN, Gamespot, and others have begun reviewing the PSP launch games, and the scores are incredible. I don't know how to show this exactly without getting every score of every game, but you could check out Gamerankings PSP section:
    http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/default_psp/1024

For some launch games, the PSP has some nice titles according to reviews. I'm still waiting for MGA and Untold Legends reviews.

Hopefully Fry's gets some in stock. Worried we might not since we're a new store and aren't even opening til next week.

I'll find it though, even if I have to go to walmart on my lunch break.

Wow, that is actually pretty interesting, seems like the games out at any system's launch usually average about a 6/10 overall, where as it looks like Dynasty Warriors is the only stinker from that list and everything else is pretty solid... good find...

Those memory stick prices are crazy. I think even someone from Sony who was speaking about the future of the PSP mentioned that prices needed to come down on the memory sticks. That, along with the UMD movie (and some game) prices, need to come down in price ASAP. Luckily, some UMD movies are already being sold in the $10-$15 range, while some publishers are smart enough to price their games around the $35-$40 range, unlike a few publishers that I don't like right now. I'm looking at you EA and Activision!

Hmm... the same publishers rumored to be pricing their games at $60-$70 next-gen. What a coincidence...

How does the Gizmondo compare to the PSP? As I said before, I am completely oblivious to gaming.

It is similar to the PSP in most regards, playing music, movies and games, but it also adds in GPS, a camera, and it sounds like better messaging. You can check out more off of their site:
    http://www.gizmondo.com/unit/
DaDakota could probably tell you more about the system as well, and probably make it sound better too. ;)

Personally, I prefer the PSP to the Gizmondo, especially from a price and gaming perspective. The GPS, camera, etc., stuff that it has is nice, but I'd rather not pay $440 for all that stuff. Chances are that Sony, or others, will offer similar products for the PSP, which I can decide to get or not to get. The games look to be far below the quality of the PSP games (which isn't necessarily too much of an insult considering the reviews mentioned earlier). I also like the PSP's design (screen, controls, etc.) over the Gizmondo. I also imagine that watching movies and music would be easier or better on the PSP, although that's just a guess.

Of course, that's all my opinion coming from my preferences. If you have the money and are in need of a multimedia device that offers GPS and whatnot, Gizmondo isn't too bad of a choice.

    I agree.

Gizmondo is crap. Too many features, not enough verifiable use.

    DD: Short Gizmondo.

I'm number 4 on the EB Games preorder list so I'm sure to pick it up on Thurs. I've transfered a couple of DVD's into the MPEG 4 format. I'm totally jazzed about the PSP, I just wish MVP Baseball was comming out at launch. A also wish Memory Stick Duo's would drop in price, which I imagine they will here pretty soon.

I am getting one at launch as well. I wasn't going to, but got a chance to see a guy with an import unit and totally was floored. I am trying to get a way to get shows off my Time Warner DVR to my PSP. I am thinking I will have to transfer things to my PC, THEN to my PSP, but getting a week's worth of TV to my PSP will be worth it.

The launch game lineup is a bit weak, IMO. I am getting Wipeout, Tiger Woods, Ridge Racer and possibly NFL Street. But one thing I am going to use the PSP alot for is holding pictures. It will be really cool to have a photo album with me when I am out or at a friend's place.

    I will write a mini-review after I get mine.

I heard of a good deal for PSP games that you guys may want to know about.

Basically, EB Games has this deal where you can get any 1st party PSP game for free if you trade in 3 PS2, GC, or Xbox games. I didn't think much of it at the time since I didn't have any games I wanted to trade-in, but then I read that you could just buy 3 crappy used games and trade those in. I read someone paid $39 for games and traded those in for two PSP games. If you don't want the 1st party games, you could come back and trade that in for another game (for equal or lesser value I guess). There is a rather large exclusion list though, which I'll go ahead and post:

(that almost makes my post as long as a Macbeth post :)).

While that is a large list, this deal does sound like something to take advantage of if you do enough work. I will say I personally haven't done this, so I don't know if this will work out as mentioned, but I'll see if I can try it later on in the week when I get my PSP. If anyone is willing to try it before then, it would be nice to hear how it goes. The deal is supposed to end April 10th.

If only they had deals like this for the memory sticks...:(
