I've never owned a playstation or nintendo. Just out of curiosity, what are the advantages of these platforms over playing games on a PC?

Yeah...it kind of turned into a nerd pissing contest...didn't it? Sorry guys. This is what happens when you go without Rocketball for too long.

Read this for a Voodoo 5 6000 AGP:

The Voodoo5 6000 AGP from 3dfx represents the pinnacle of Voodoo5 technology. Taking advantage of the revolutionary scalable architecture of the 3dfx VSA-100 chip, the Voodoo 5 6000 AGP features four processors working together to be the world's first 3D accelerator to break the Gigapixel barrier. Clocking in at over 1.33 Gigapixels a second, the Voodoo5 6000 AGP can create breathtaking 3D worlds in vivid 32-bit color. Boasting state-of-the-art Real-Time Full-Scene HW Anti-Aliasing, the exclusive T-Buffer!" Digital Cinematic Effects engine, 2D resolutions as high as 2048x1536 and a whopping 128MB of graphics memory, the Voodoo5 6000 is the ultimate 2D/3D accelerator for the hard-core PC enthusiast.

I don't know what this means, but I can tell you that is some serious, sick, 3D gaming power. I have a Voodoo 3 and I am mesmorized playing UT Tournament. I find myself going to the edge of a canyon and leaning over my seat to see if I see the bottom. That is realism.

I am not say PSII won't be good. Its just that PC games have the power to do it better. We are not talking about 3.5 million polygons per second. We are talking 1.33 GIGAPIXELS per second. That, my friends, is juice. I only have 300mhz and 384ram and get a goosepimplies just playing off a voodoo 3. Imagine if I upgrade my machine to twice my present power?

PSII is gonna rock. But compared to PC, its not even close.

It's a tough call...the Voodoo5 6000 has 128 meg of memory but only SDRAM. The GeForce2 Ultra has 64 meg of fast DDR RAM. Benchmark testing done comparing the Voodoo5 5500 and GeForce2 Ultra shows the GeForce2 Ultra as the clear winner. How can 3dfx tout gameplay at such high resolutions when no monitors support such high resolutions? Like I'm going to go out and replace my monitor so I can play at these ridiculous resolutions. The max resolution anyone will probably use is 1600x1200.

Anyway, an excerpt from the review article by Thomas Pabst at Tom's hardware:

"NVIDIA has managed it once more to leapfrog 3dfx. If you look at the results you will notice that GeForce 2 Ultra scores more than double the frame rates of a Voodoo5 5500 at high resolutions. Voodoo5 6000 will hardly score more than double of the 5500, due to its design. Therefore it is most likely that NVIDIA will actually keep the 3D performance crown even by the time that 3dfx finally releases the 6000. This is bad news for 3dfx, since their part will most likely be more expensive than the already luxury GeForce 2 Ultra as well.

So far everyone who saw the GeForce 2 Ultra in action was amazed by its performance. It is almost too fast for today's games. However, for me this Ultra-version of the GeForce 2 chip is finally the product that I expected when NVIDIA released GeForce 2 GTS less than 4 months ago. It comes at mind a blowing $499 US, which won't be affordable to a whole lot of people. If you should indeed spend this rather huge amount of money for a graphics card you will get the fastest and technically most advanced 3D-accelerator money can buy right now. Make sure that you play a lot of games on it, to make the investment worthwhile!

Should you buy this card or not? Well, I guess you can answer this question by yourself best after you had a good look into your wallet. If you only go for the best and if price is no worry for you then go ahead and buy this card. For 'normal' people the price tag of $499 is a very bitter pill to swallow, but obviously someone is supposed to buy 3dfx's Voodoo5 6000 as well and that one's supposed to go for $600, without any T&L or per-pixel-lighting support.

NVIDIA's next chip 'NV20' is already waiting 'around the corner' and this one will sport a complete new set of features, all for DirectX 8. Nowadays you wonder if Microsoft's DirectX is driving NVIDIA or if it isn't really the other way around. Most 3D chip makers haven't even caught up with DircetX 7 yet ..."

When it comes to graphic cards, the better the drivers, the better the card can perform. NVidia's latest drivers win hands down. I have to go with NVidia for my next graphics card as 3dfx always seems to be playing catch-up.

Nerd-mode off, Surf

Hey, it wasn't a pissing contest. LOL! Anyway, yeah, I go ape when building a new PC with completely new equipment... which probably happens about once every 1.5 - 2 years. It's kinda like the first time you... well, no it isn't. But it still feels pretty cool.

And I'm somewhat of a PC geek, I guess. And what's Napster?

So what kind of case are you gonna get, huh, huh, huh? I'm looking at Fong Kai cases and 300W power supplies. *droooool*

Hey, did you hear about the latest Intel Pentium III 1.13 Gghz recall due to a faulty chip? Well, Tom Pabst over at Tom's Hardware is the primary person responsible for getting the truth out as he tried an early-bird CPU but it was so unstable it couldn't complete benchmarks. He tried on a modified VC-820 motherboard that Intel has tested and recommended among several other motherboards and the CPU failed with instability. Tom found others having similar problems.

But, nobody would listen and/or pursue the truth thinking he was biased. Intel brushed him off for a month dismissing it as a non-issue. Another site gets early-bird CPUs, tests them, and runs benchmarks on them....called hardwarecentral.com. Well, the "siteleader" wrote Tom a nasty e-mail calling his testing "a joke". Check this out...this was before Intel recalled the chip due to chip/instability problems. Boy, does she put a foot in her mouth [IMG]:
----------- -----------
Tom,
I must say you've made a total joke out of yourself with your latest 'update.' Quite frankly, I have had no problem whatsoever with the 1.13GHz Pentium III and I'm using the exact same motherboards (Asus, Via and i820 chipset as well as the old P2B) as I presume you're using. If you cannot refrain from posting erroneous and obviously biased reviews or updates or whatever you like to call 'em, then at least make sure your lab is correctly setup and all benchmarking and system assembly operations are performed by a person capable of doing so. If I had a faulty CPU I would check back with the manufacturer in the first place and have it replaced BEFORE telling the world of your 'mishaps' or posting any benchmarks. You're mis-informing your audience as well as making your own testing procedures as well as your ethics a joke!

From my point of view (just finished the 10th redundant SYSMark 2000 run on a i440BX):

There is NOTHING wrong with Intel's new Pentium III 1.13 GHz processor.

Do you really need all of this 'bashing' and controversy to be able to reach those 20 million hits you're so openly bragging about, if I were you I'd rather have half that and still have my journalistic integrity.

Hope you take this to hart this time, as you really should!

Sander Sassen
Siteleader at HardwareCentral
-------------------------------------------
Anyway, I thought it was stinging and funny. So, what did Tom do? He posted her e-mail in his victory article on his site informing of the recall where he gets the primary credit. His site gets millions of hits. Intel only ignored him for four weeks. Boy, Intel looks bad...rush rush rush. AMD is the way to go at least for now.

Hey Almu, I only put up the Nvidia vs. 3dfx comparison to show that if 3dfx is leaps and bounds better than PS2, then NVidia is leaps and bounds ahead of both 3dfx and PS2 [IMG].

Of course, my Intel chip remarks were way out of line [IMG]. I think we have established that the PS2 is good for what it does but can never come close to a game that can take advantage of the latest and greatest PC hardware, the PS2 will be close to impossible to get unless you pre-order now, the games may not be available then, the PS2 import player won't play US games, and the Nintendo should be better than both x-box and PS2 when it comes out. I guess I will be buying all four items(pc, x-box, PS2, and nintendo) [IMG].

There is a new report out that Sony will cut its planned shipments to the US on the PS2 in half. Is this going to be the hot toy for Christmas that will sell for more than list on the gray market?
