And if workers want a healthier environment to work in, then they shold be afforded that luxury. It's not being banned....it's being banned inside the establishment...they can go outside. A ban would mean that they can't smoke PERIOD. That is clearly not the case. Why is this so hard?
What would this mean for "cigar bars" such as Downing St., Cigar Lounge, and Paesanos Lounge? No more cigar bars? They will now outlawed in Houston? Freedom indeed.
as far as i know, you cant smoke inside an arena to begin with anyway....but i am pretty sure that those venues (giants stadium, continental airlines arena, MSG) have an area separate where you can re-enter
Again, they can work in the smoke free section of the establishment. I know you just want to get into a semantics war about this not being a ban, but IT IS! People will be banned from smoking in establishments that now allow it. That is a ban no matter how you try to parse your words. It is not YOUR place to tell a business owner what they can or cannot do in their place of business and it should not be the place of the politicians either. I go to restaurants with smoking sections regularly and with very few exceptions, am not bothered by the smokers as they are already segregated into a different location or room. If we were to require a separate room with ventilation and air scrubbers, that would have the intended effect of clearing the air for nonsmokers and would not infringe on the rights of the owners to allow smoking in their establishments.
But those are venues whose owners do not allow smoking. You are talking about banning behavior that business owners want to allow in their establishments. It is not YOUR place, nor the place of the politicians, to ban perfectly legal behavior. Regulate the businesses to provide smoke free areas and everyone is happy. I realize that you don't give a rats a$$ about making anyone other than you happy, but if we allow the majority to simply trample the freedoms of the minority, then we aren't America anymore.
I got news for you....the cost of a filtration system and/or constructing a separate room for smokers will be enough to dissuade owners from bellyaching about the ordinance. In fact, his business may grow. I own a restaurant in NJ...we had a non smoking section for a while but decided to make the whole place non smoking once NY passed their law. Since then, our business has grown....and we had a LOT of regular customers who smoked. They still come....and if they want a cigarette, they go outside.

I like to take a big crap on the table in restaurants when I am done eating.. I'm in the minority on liking this sort of behavior and taking a crap is totally legal. I think it is un American for you to discriminate against me crapping on public tables. I think that table crapping only areas are totally fine. How am I bothering a non table crapper when I am in my own table crapping area? The majority who do not like me taking a big crap on restaurant tables makes a law stating that I am banned from crapping on restaurant tables. I therefore have to go home and crap on my table instead of bothering everyone else. How dare you take my table crapping in public away!!!
And if the cost of the filtration system is to onerous, they will have the option of making their establishment non-smoking. This gives CHOICE to the BUSINESS OWNER that YOU would prefer to simply take away. The OWNER should make the choice of whether to comply with the regulations or go non-smoking. It is not YOUR place or the politicians to decide this issue for every business owner.
Actually, we made the switch because some of the waitresses asked if we could do it since the ban in NY was related to the employees....so we did it to accomodate them...had nothing to do with patrons....the same way the ordinance doesnt.

But it was still YOUR choice as the owner, a choice that YOU have no right to take away from other business owners.
Restaurants are fine if I can get in a non-smoking section. However, I don't even bother going to concerts anymore because of the smoke. I end up feeling suffocated and my eyes end up having a bad reaction and become scratchy and blood-shot. So, it's a little more than a "minor inconvenience" to some of us. Live music is one of my favorite things in the world, but I usually end up having a miserable time just because I'm so uncomfortable. I guess I should just chalk that up to "life not being fair." I wouldn't shed a tear if this ban goes through.
NEWS FLASH: Business owners care about one thing....their bottom line....if they wont lose money, they wont care.
