Happened to me a boatload of times during the early teen years. That's been over 30 years ago. Very few times since then.

I was usually able to shake myself awake within 10-15 seconds. Very scary experience. I felt like panicking. Eventually it stopped bothering me so much because it was the same-old same-old.

They're talking about sleep paralysis, not nocturnal emissions.

I wonder if this is similar to those dreams where you can't move and something scary is coming towards you. I had a couple of those when I was younger.

I get hypnic jerks a lot, but have never experienced sleep paralysis.

Something else that happens to me quite often is that I have dreams that my teeth are falling out. When this happens I'll usually wake up and find that my jaw is clenched so tightly that I literally have to pull it apart with my hands. Scary stuff.

Also, thread title made me think of this song:

Comforting to know that it's normal.. I thought I was the only one experiencing this. I used to experience it all the time. Scared the crap out of me the first couple of times because I heard noises and it seemed like there was something/someone in the room flying around just watching me as I lay there unable to move. I would try to move but I couldn't... as if my brain was not sending the signal even though I was consciously telling my body to get the ***** up. I even tried to scream but nothing comes out.

It happened to me a while ago. My arms and legs felt like were tied down to my bed and I could feel someone laying down next to me. I didn't want to open my eyes because I was scared but I could hear them breahing next to me.

My brother said this happened to him a lot, but claimed that he would be able to get out of his body and look down on himself, he could go further away if he wanted but got scared he would not be able to get back in his body.

I actually practiced this (OBE) and sleep paralysis all summer. It took me about a month in a half to be able to control getting into sleep paralysis (I would try every friday and saturday). I stopped practicing in September but between June (when I started) and September I had 4 out of body experiences. However you really aren't truly out of your body at least in our realm because alot of things around my apartment were completely different while 'out of my body', as was the case in my old house that I visited. Also when I looked at my body lying in bed it looked different as in it was completely pale almost dead looking, very freaky. Also when out of body I could feel my lips but not move them, they were always in the exact position as they were on my face when I would come back to sleep paralysis before getting up. Also while out of body I floated instead of walked. However it was amazing enough to make me change my major to neroscience to learn more because for the brain to be able to do the experiences I experienced floored me. I will go back to practicing it but just not while classes are going on, I don't have fridays or saturdays to work on it, plus I want to go out and do stuff.

Anyone who denies sleep paralysis or obe's just have not actually tried to do it. Which I recommend everyone to do, theres so much to learn.

Read about the black shadows or shadow people - it's an interesting phenomenon.

How do you produce an out of body experience? Are you a narcoleptic? :p

    Just curious...

Okay feeling like someone is there is legit occurrence with sleep paralysis, I don't see anything wrong with it. No one is claiming it as some kind of supernatural phenomena....But agreed wtf is with out of body experiences? I thought we're talking about sleep paralysis here, you know your body still being in REM sleep but your mind is semi-conscious.

Woah woah woah, I don't think anyone is denying sleep paralysis, its just a nature occurrence in our bodies for some. But OBE? Wtf? And what do you mean try to do it?

This doesn't have to do with Sleep paralysis but since people are talking about hallucinations i'll talk about some i've had with shrooms.

I was sitting in the lounge room with my friend who was playing the game skate on ps3 and all of a sudden my jeans turned into scales and when I looked up the room kept changing colors. When I say that I mean it would be completely red and when I closed my eyes for a few seconds it would go completely yellow.

I couldn't really handle these super vivid hallucinations so I told my friend I was going to sleep and walked to my room. The only light that was on in my room was the light from a switch in my room. This tiny light lit up my whole room in my mind. As I tried to fall asleep I felt I was Tron or something riding motorbikes and everything was black or neon blue. I did actually manage to fall asleep and what was freaky was apparently I was speaking in some crazy tongue super loud. Loud enough to wake my brother sleeping in another room. When he came into my room and woke me up apparently I sat up real fast looked him dead straight in the eye and fell back asleep. Weird thing is I had no idea he came into my room...

It's your body/brain's natural protection for you during REM sleep. It keeps you from sleepwalking and hurting yourself. It's normal and happens nightly.

You're only aware of it as "paralysis" if you wake up too quickly during REM sleep and your body hasn't reacted.

Exactly, only people who denie it are one's who haven't tried it. You can do it if you can sleep paralysis. DO I think we really get out of our bodies? IDK because like I said, there's alot of things that are different and shouldn't be there. However the experience is unlike any hallucinogen or drug, its real or seems so real. Your full conscious and even thinking more clearly then you normally would. It makes me interested because I'm sure the brain produces this OBE state and thats amazing to me, like I said after my very first OBE is when I decided to switch my major to neroscience because I now must know everything about this state and how it is possible.

In sleep paralysis remain calm and dont freak out like most, it takes about 3 sleep paralysis states to not feel any fear. Relax, try to wiggle your toes a bit and you will hear weird sounds like a static or alot of people talking at once if you can remain calm then immediatly you will feel a vibration I can't describe, just a crazy vibration that seems to make everything off balance after the vibration your thinking 'holy sh/t this is for real omg its real', imagine yourself falling through your bed and try to twist and you detach it is amazing.

only ones who denie it are those who havent tried it, usually out of fear.

I'm not sure what denie is but no one is denying sleep paralysis, just this ridiculous out of body phenomenon you are speaking of. You were obviously semi awake while still dreaming and seeing hallucinations (or in my personal opinion screaming for attention since if the former is true you probably have some serious neurotic issues!).

I can't really believe you are a neuroscience major when you can't even spell it properly!

In summary, see a psychiatrist for some meds and stop trying to induce sleep paralysis. Sleep is something an untrained expert should not mess with.

When you were practicing this did you ever feel like you had stuck a hair pin into a light socket?
