i'm sure you rocket freaks have posted on this, but i only heard about it today. the rockets have a very large $4.5 (?) sign-and-trade exception, a residual of the pippen deal, they must use this season. if they are committed to improving the team, and if they would "do more if it wasn't for the salary cap," they'll of course use the exception.

if, on the other hand, they let the opportunity pass (remember, signing mobley has nothing to do with this) then they'll be telling you the salary cap is their friend, keeping them from spending while giving them an excuse for you.

i hope they do the right thing, and bring a talented young and athletic player here.

    Fair enough.

Tell us the name of the player that is available and how the deal works.

Why would his current team do it?

What is in it for them?

We got a 4.5 dollar exception? Cool. I wonder who'd play for $4.50? Hrmm....

Anyways, does anybody remember how long we have to use this exception? I was thinking something on the order of "until this October", at least from what I remembered. Anyone?

It's not that simple. Whatever we don't use of the trade exception, we have more in cap room next year to sign free agents. So if there is no one real interesting available, the Rockets might be well-advised to simply let the exception expire and save it for a free agent next year.

I thought that if we didnt use it by October that we Lost it. I remember some teams earlier wanting to get it from the ROcks but they were saying they have until October to use it or lose it and didnt want to get rid of it now if they could use it later.

Why would another team give up on its young superstar, and take on less salary, and presumably a much lesser player? More teams are trying to dump their overpaid cap fodders, the Maloneys and McIlvaines of the world.

We have till October 1 to use it.

And uh, it's a trade exception, not a sign and trade exception.

it seems to me it's alexander's money, not yours, so why shoud you care if the guy is overpaid? if they don't spend it, they lose it (lackey revisionism aside). it only matters if the overpaid guy is better than the rockets' 12th guy, and on this team that's almost impossible not to be. if they don't use it, then the reason is alexander woudl rather keep the money in his wife's checking account than spend it on the rockets, and that fact will go over well- NOT- with the taxpayers he's asking for a giant welfare check from.

    hetero doxy,

You're missing the point. If we use the trade exception, then that is $4.5M more dollars that count against the cap. Which means that we have $4.5M less dollars to spend on free agents next year. So, unless you get a great offer, it's probably better to let the exception expire.

no, *you're* missing the point. it's an exception, and not using it doesn't increase next year's cap $1.

no doxy, you're missing the point.

By using the exception, we will likely be spending it on a guy who has more than 1 year left on his contract. Because of that, if we hypothetically traded a guy making 3 million and the exception for someone making 7.5 million, next year, instead of having that 3 million hindering our cap, we'd have 7.5, meaning, by using the exception, we'd have 4.5 million less to throw at Webber, Lewis, Finley, Mutumbo, et. al.

Mango-Sorry about yet another reply in this meaningless thread, I decided to save aelliott the trouble.

i understood very well the long-term thing. my point remains: $4.5 million for next year (the year we're buying tickets for now) i son the table. does les spend it on the rockets, or on caviar for himself?

no, *you're* missing the point. it's an exception, and not using it doesn't increase next year's cap $1.

Ok, let's say our current payroll is $45M. Now we go sign trade a $1M/year player for a $5M/year player by using the exception. The payroll is now $49M. Since we're not going to be trading for a guy in the last year of his deal, then next off season we'll have $4M less in cap space.

Remember, an exception DOES NOT mean that money doesn't count against the cap. An exception simply allows you to exceed the cap, but all money counts against the cap. If we use the trade exception, then by definition, we're raising our payroll and thereby decreasing our cap space for next off season.
