I found out about them through another site, but the kid i was talking to said it wasnt really for the casual user to try and mess with a shell for windows, was wondering if its really that hard or is it easier then this kid makes it out to be?
I never made one or installed one, but my friend used to mess with them. They look kind of cool, but I'd rather waste my time here. P.S. Shells for windows are kind of like skins for WinAmp or Media Player. They just change the location and graphics of the user interface on your Windows machine.
he kinda is... the shells for windows just change how you interface with the Windows lower levels. they were kinda cool to play with when I used Win9x...but I have no reason to use them for 2K/XP... If you want to play with shells, install Linux...more shells and window managers than you can shake a stick at...and you could even design and use your own.
Back to the thread... How does one change the shell of our windows?! I mean besides in Control Panel >Display > Appearance?! Is that all you're talking about?
Well, the shell in windows, if messed around for a good bit, can change the entire look of windows. Trust me, I have messed around with shell32 quit a few times, messed it some of those times. Now the *nix shells, I have only used to them for uh other reasons. edit: I'd recommend google.com or try a tweaking site. Search around for shell hacking.
I think you might be talking about themes and visual styles for windows. Rather then just changing the wallpaper. you can change everything from the icons, to buttons, taskbar, layout etc.. Take a look at the folllowing sites: http://www.themexp.org/ Click on Visual Styles near the top of the left hand menu. There are also several different mods/themes at http://www.deviantart.com/ A direct link to some themes at deviantart.com http://gallery.deviantart.com/theme/
I use Object Desktop made by Stardock. To see some of the ways people (and you) can change your entire Windows look and feel, click here. If you just want to skin your Windows, click here or here. There are many other things you can do to Windows using this tool and others like it. There are themes that turn the desktop into an OS-X wannabe clone.
Yea i am just talking about themes, but when i was looking at one it did change the icons and crap but this kid told me that its hard cuz u have to change the icons seperatly and crap, so i was like oh well better not mess with it then.
