When I saw that game, at first, I thought that Shaq was full of crap. Yeah, Mutombo was probably flopping a bit... but Shaq was throwing his wait around and initiating more than his fair share of contact.

But then someone else changed my mind. Having this discussion with the Laker-fan friend of mine with whom I've been watching the game, he pointed out that Shaq gets hacked CONSTANTLY without calls. I'm not talking hack-a-shaq... it seems that refs let players get away with MUCH more against Shaq than anyone else. The double teams can be especially bad, slapping his hands, arms, etc... if they did that to Hakeem, I'd be screaming at the TV.

So, I've come to think that if Shaq doesn't get the benefit of the doubt... neither should Mutombo. If you have to allow some hacking on shaq to even the odds... fine, but don't let Deke flop and get foul calls.

    So?

I agree that Shaq does get hammered in the post without as many calls as he should be getting. However,

    1. It's probably good for Shaq not to get the call, b/c he is strong enough to deal with it and score. If they called a foul, it'd be a toss up at the ft line.

    2. Shaq tends to do his fair share of traveling and elbowing and wraparounds and offensive fouls that aren't called.

    3. This tends to happen to the greatest big men -- same thing happened to Dream. He couldn't buy a foul call. I bet I'm not the only one who remembers the game where he was being pummeled, and finally just threw it up facing away from the basket while being pushed to the ground. No call, but incredibly the ball went in.

How about having them call all the fouls on Shaq and all the fouls on the stiffs holding him. Shaq would foul out by halftime and so would about 2 or 3 stiffs. I think that would hurt the Lakers more than the stiffs' team. There are 2 moves Shaq makes that I can't stand because he gets away with murder when executing them.

    1) He turns into the paint driving an elbow into whatever may be in his way to clear space. He nearly collapsed Mutombo's face doing this last game.

    2) He lowers his shoulder into the chest of opposing players.

I don't care if he backs people down. That's part of the game, but throwing elbows and burying your shoulder into somebody shouldn't be.

    Oh... and wrong forum. [IMG]

The painted area is a different kind of basketball in the playoffs. I like the physical play. These guys are big. They need to pound. Le 'em go at it. This what playoff basketball is all about. If you think Shaq gets hammered now. Wait until the zone comes in. He's going to get clobbered.

People get away with more physical play with Shaq because it has no effect on him. If I were to step onto the court, Mutombo could poke me with a finger, and I would hit the deck. Whereas, people beat up on Shaq and he keeps moving in rhythm, so the foul doesn't have to be called.
