Are you still a real man if you watched the US Open instead of football? I just saw an update and apparently Andy Roddick won the thing. Now, I'll watch tennis occasionally, especially if the girlies are playing; Serena does not qualify, but would a real man watch tennis today?
I think a real man doesn't measure his masculinity based on what sports he may or may not watch. Not to mention, Andy Roddick kicked some serious ass today. It's only thanks to his blistering 141 mph serve that we don't currently have two foreign winners of our home-grown US Open.
Actually, I watched BOTH. Texans first. US Open second. If you haven't watched tennis, you are missing out. These guys are TREMENDOUS athletes - very similar to basketball players in their quickness and agility. Roddick is an exciting guy to watch. We have our tickets to the Tennis Masters at Westside in November. Can't wait.
I watched football over tennis today, but there aint nothing unmanly about tennis. It is by far one of the hardest sports to master.
I watched tennis all the time when Conners, McEnroe, Borg and company were playng. I just don't enjoy 200mph serves and little volleying. Mrs. JB, I don't like the blistering serves if that's mostly what the match is. I watch some tennis by the other sex on occasion, however. What's football? There was a game I watched when Houston had a team called the Oilers, but I can't remember what the game was or what happened to the team. Did they get abducted by aliens??
Deckard: Actually, it isn't just big servers. In fact, Roddick is just a freak compared to most. There are some big servers but the serve and volley is actually making a comeback. And there isn't any prettier tennis than watching guys like Roger Federer (the Wimbeldon champ) and Roddick's opponent today, Juan Carlos Ferrero, who also won the French Open. Guys like Lleyton Hewitt, Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, James Blake, Carlos Moya, David Nalbandian and others are tremendous young players. Even Agassi is still crusing along and lost to Ferrero in the semi's of the US Open. Plus, in women's tennis, the Williams' sisters are finally starting to see a challenge from the Belgians - Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardienne. It's really a great time to enjoy tennis. The youth movement in the sport has finally taken the reigns from the likes Sampras and Agassi, though Agassi might argue with that.
OK, you convinced me. I've completely gotten out of the habit, except on rare occasions, of watching men's tennis, but I'll give it another go.
I didn't watch either. There was a Morgan Fairchild marathon on Lifetime I simply had to catch. there is only one sport and that sport is basketball and there is only one team, and that team is the ROCKETS! allegedly
Tennis just really bores me, Its probably the monotony of it. same with auto racing, I prefer watching 3 hours of the PGA to either. I did watch a little bit of James Blake's match though, the kid has some nice talent. But nothing will ever compare to the NFL. It is just such an exciting sport, where (pardon the cliche) "Any Given Sunday" anything can happen.
Me too. I think DT watched both, but maybe he fell asleep during tennis. In fact, I think I did too.... hmmm. I don't think watching tennis makes you any less of a man. I might be slightly worried if you were deep hardcore into figure skating or badminton something........
Amen to that. It's a freaking ridiculously difficult sport to master, and it takes a *very* gifted athlete to excel. Some of the best athletes in the world play tennis.
I was surprised to see Roddick trying so hard to manipulate the ball...doesn't seem to work well on players at that level, does it? One Nalbandian return comes to mind, Andy sliced it to the opposite side of the court, and even though the ball had serious side-spin, Nalbandian hits a blistering passing shot. Deckard, Roddick was impressive and not to take away from his performance, but Nalbandian and Ferrero were both a little played-out. Otherwise, it might have been a lot less Andy and a lot more volleying in the final. Andy's got some work to do before he can consistently dominate. IMVHO.
Roddick was in Rolling Stones magazine posing as a model for some clothes. He was shirtless on a few of them and he his is an absolute twerp. He has no muscle. It's all skin and bones. I don't know how he could generate so much power.
