So sad. Reports say the shooter was another kid who was "picked on" by classmates alot. Really, really sad.

A real tragedy. What would drive a kid to do such a thing? My prayers go out to the families of the victims.

In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

"picked on"??? I was "picked on" in school. I skateboarded, listened to 'girlie bands' like The Smiths, the Cocteau Twins, Prince, etc. I never raised a gun at anyone. Just proves again that violence is for the weak minded.

What has been going on lately? Are there no kids with strong character anymore or is this merely a problem exposed b/c of population density (crowding)?

That wasn't really my point. There are so many issues dealing with the disenfranchising of children, it would take volumes to go over it. In fact, volumes have been written on it.

I'll just say it is sad and leave it at that.

Sorry Jeff, I didn't mean for my post to sound as if it was directed towards you. I was merely responding to the story.

Bush called it a “disgraceful act of cowardice”. I was a little surprised that he would say something that harsh. Not very p.c.

What can you say? Why is this happening now, how come it didn't happen while I was in school...It seems the more liberal the world gets, the more it goes to hell!

Exactly because it's the liberals putting the guns in the hands of 15 year olds.

You're right, let's go back to the days of slavery and to a time when women were here on Earth to be barefoot and pregnant.

    Those days were great.

And Kagy, before you start a rant saying that conservatives are not for slavery and do not feel that way about women, let me go ahead and say that my reply was not trying to say that.

I'm no Bush fan...although I'd take him over that other guy...

But I'm glad he was that harsh.

I'm sick of all the damn sensitivity.

I’m sick of all the “we need to have a better understanding of our children”

Kids today have a lot more “knowledge” than kids of yesterday, but it still takes “years” to learn life lessons. They need to be taught right and wrong, and I’m not talking about reading it in a book or being asked to think about it during "time out." They need rewards for doing right and punishment for doing wrong. Several lives were ruined today. The kid who did the shooting needs to have his life ruined, and the public needs to have it DRIVEN into them OVER AND OVER AGAIN that his life will be ruined, so that other kids will know that their worst punishment for a crime such as this isn't a few years in an institution getting “counseled.”

The quote could also be used to describe the gun laws that allow this to happen

For the record, I didn't say I didn't like what he said, just that I was surprised.

Yeah, didn't everyone hear...the kid just walked in to the local sporting goods store and bought himself the gun he used to do this. A waiting period would've shown him.

I think that the media shouldn't bring this up at all in the first place. Columbine was a tragedy that the whole nation got to know about. Ever since then, there have been like 3-4 shooting in schools in the last year or so. Just putting it out there in the media encourages other idiots to do it. I'm 15 and I would never even think of touching a gun.Ever. Not even in self defense. It's all about martial arts for me. Gun's are just to risky and should be outlawed unless your going hunting or something. Then they should let you rent a gun to hunt.

And if we had a law against killing people this may have not have happened either... oops.

I would try to refrain from using this act to discuss gun control, but there are fetching people here using this act to further their own ends.

I find it utterly amazing that handgun murder advocates usually blame the handgun user rather than the gun; however, today they blame the media... not the handgun user. Huh? How does that work?

The poor handgun users must feel torn. They should be responsible until it fits into the "media is bad" argument.

    Meanwhile, two kids are dead.

    Ahhhh... retribution vs. utilitarianism.

Unfortunately, I don't give a rat's ass as to what happens to this kid. Both rehabilitation and punishment concentrate too much on the criminal and future criminals. Who cares? They either die or are subjected to prison rape (hey, I've seen Oz).

I'm worried about the people that actually follow the rules. I'm worried about my progeny, my wife. I'm sorry, but noone can pat me on the back and say "at least he got his due". Huh? Karl Malone got his due when MJ pushed off, it doesn't work the same way here. If my wife were ever taken from me... the person that completes me... nothing will put me at peace.

Put up metal detectors. Make handguns illegal. Instead of invoking shortsighted rules that appeal to people to follow the golden rule, have the foresight to realize that they don't.

I have to agree. There are a lot of subtle things in our society which are leading to the decline of our morals. You can't have things both ways and then be surprised when a kid goes on a killing spree.
