Does anyone know anything about job recruitment phishing scams? I'm not looking for a job, but I got an e-mail from a supposed headhunting firm that seemed to know just enough about me to possibly be realistic. The e-mail was full of spelling errors and they capitalized words at random. Normally this would clue me in, but they claim to only employ former military so that could be a reasonable explanation. Their website also feature a "web greeter" pop-up (as a sort of chat window) that asks you questions, but seems to close immediately if you click on another window. It's weird. http://www.orioninternational.com I don't know if this is a scam for sure. Google didn't turn up much, but there were a few links to reports or job recruitment scams. It did show a $15 million fraud conviction of the founder of Orion Intl. though. Whether or not Orion is shady, I'm curious. I guess my question is, how does that work? How can people make money off fake headhunting agencies?
People can make money off any kind of scenario, just by introducing some kind of "processing fee" later on, or requiring bank/credit card info in order to close the deal. That's how 99% of scams basically work. Not quite as cool as the movies.
That domain is apparently registered to some group named "MilitaryStars". If you go to militarystars.com you get a job search engine for military professionals. Never heard of them, but that doesn't mean it's not legit. Their domains servers are on ORION-CAREERNETWORK.COM. Which point back to orioninternational.com. I dunno... I haven't tried google'ing anything, but there's got to be info out there on them if they're (not) legit.
Finding out how they got your name would probably be a pretty good clue as to whether they're shady or not.
